Veronica was very pleased to see that the snow had been lightly frosting over the camp. Before she'd left, she asked her father to allow the snow in. Nothing got inside the borders unless her father, Dionysus, allowed it. So there was yet another perk to her favorite child status.
Frost covered the chariot track and the strawberry fields. The cabins were decorated with tiny flickering lights, like Christmas lights, except they were balls of real fire. More lights glowed in the woods, and weirdest of all, a fire flickered in the attic window of the Big House, where the Oracle dwelt, imprisoned in an old mummified body. I wondered why the fire was there.
"Whoa," Nico said as Veronica helped him climb off the bus. "Is that a climbing wall?"
Veronica smiled at his interest. "Yeah," she said. "It is."
"Why is there lava pouring down it?"
"Because Chiron thinks the monsters aren't killing half-bloods fast enough. Come on. I'll introduce you to him. Zoë, have you met—"
"I know Chiron," Zoë said stiffly, like Chiron being male was a bad thing. "Tell him we will be in Cabin Eight. Hunters, follow me."
Cabin Eight was a lot like Cabin Two. It was only there for the sake of being respectful to the "we're the best assholes" Olympian gods. Hera and Artemis didn't have demigod kids. But at least Artemis' Hunters could use her cabin. Hera's was just for decoration.
"I'll show you the way," Grover offered the girls.
"We know the way."
"Oh, really, it's no trouble. It's easy to get lost here, if you don't"—he tripped over a canoe and somehow didn't shut the hell up—"like my old daddy goat used to say! Come on!"
Okay, this was stupid. Veronica wasn't usually judgmental—especially of Grover—but this was getting sad. Eternal maidens will not love you, Grover. Trying to woo a girl that's not into you in hopes of gaining her affection is literally the definition of simp.
Zoë rolled her eyes, but maybe she knew Grover was gonna keep creeping. The Hunters grabbed their things and went to their cabin. As Bianca was leaving, she leaned over and whispered something to Nico. Veronica assumed she was waiting for an answer, but Nico just scowled and turned away.
"Take care, sweethearts!" Apollo called after the Hunters. He winked at Percy. "Watch out for those prophecies, Percy. I'll see you soon."
"What do you mean?"
Instead of answering him, Apollo smiled at Veronica. "Great power can be a test of sanity, and madness can be affected by love."
"Wait, what?" Veronica questioned. "The fuck does that mean?"
