"Dad," Veronica asked. "Can you ask Zeus to give me a little privilege? Just a little wish?"
Dionysus raised an eyebrow and ruffled Veronica's now loose hair. "What is it?"
"Okay, since Percy made the selfless decision, can mine be a little more selfish?" Veronica asked. "Because he covered the important stuff."
"Just say it, Roni," Dionysus said.
"May I be allowed to address the gods as I wish without complaint?" Veronica asked. "And if I may, may it be any god, anywhere?"
Dionysus sighed. "You ask to be rude," he said. "I will see what I can do. Zeus won't like this, and I'll have to find a compromise."
"Yay!" Veronica said, running off.
After that, Veronica, Percy, and Annabeth were on their way out when Percy suddenly spotted Hermes in a side courtyard of the palace. He was staring at an Iris-message in the mist of a fountain.
"I'll meet you at the elevator," Percy said.
"Gotcha," Veronica said. "See you soon, Dream Boat."
When Percy finally came back, Annabeth asked, "Why do you smell like smoke?"
"Um," Percy said, "it's a—"
"And wine?" Veronica questioned. "And my mom's perfume?"
"As I was saying," Percy sighed, "long story."
"Mhm," Veronica said, taking Percy's hand.
Together, the trio made their way down to the street level. No one spoke a word. The music was awful—Neil Diamond or something. Veronica sighed under her breath.
"The gods need better elevator tunes," Veronica grumbled. Annabeth and Percy murmured quiet agreements.
When they made it to the lobby, Sally and Paul were there, arguing with the bald security guy, who'd magically returned to his post.
"I'm telling you," Sally shouted, "we have to go up! My son—" Then she saw the teenagers and her eyes widened. "Percy!"
She ran to Percy and hugged him tightly. "We saw the building lit up blue," she said. "But then you didn't come down. You went up hours ago!"
