DENZYL'S POV
Devyn leads me out of the common room and to his bedroom. He turns to me as I close the door.
"What did you mean?" Devyn's voice is not blaming or angry.
"I meant what I said. You own yourself. You're not indebted to Wil anymore. You don't have to obey him-"
"But what about you? I'm indebted to you now. Should I-"
"No! No, never," I cut Devyn off, afraid he will get the wrong impression. "You don't owe me anything. I just want you to be free and happy. I didn't get you out of my clan just to be some human's slave." I can feel a low growl grow in my throat at the thought of Devyn being owned by anyone.
"But you used your money to...save me. I feel like I should do something."
I look down at Devyn's big, green eyes and start thinking of ways to make the human feel like he is not indebted to me. I smile softly when a solution comes to mind. "Then, do me one favor."
"Anything."
"Be happy."
Devyn sucks in his breath as he looks up at me, a certain look entering his eye. "But...what if I'm scared." He looks at me with wide eyes, awaiting my reply.
I smile down at him tenderly. "It's okay...but how do you know if-" I am cut off by soft lips on mine. My eyes widen as Devyn steps back and purses his lips together hesitantly.
"You make me happy," Devyn says, his green eyes gazing at me.
My heart races as I hear Devyn's confession. Before I know it, I grab Devyn's waist and pull him into me. I hear him gasp softly as I cradle his neck and kiss him. After a moment, Devyn opens his lips, and I slip my tongue in, tasting his sweet mouth. Devyn fists the front of my shirt, his eyes closed.
I pull away and step back as a fear grows in me. "This isn't because you feel indebted to me, is it?"
"No," Devyn shakes his head. "I genuinely wanted to kiss you."
My heart flutters in relief. "Me too," I say, stepping back in and kissing his soft lips. I feel myself heating up and getting more passionate, so I break the kiss as my want rises. I keep my eyes from turning red as Devyn opens his eyes slowly. "I'm sorry," I pant, fighting to control myself. "I don't want to hurt you."
"It's okay," he smiles. "Thank you." He glances at the floor before looking back at me. "About what you said about me not being indebted to Wil..."
"What is it?" I ask softly, taking his hand.
"I can't break the engagement."
"Why?"
"My parents signed a contract with Wil before they died."
This enrages me. "Your parents? But you are so young! How could they?!"
"Don't worry. My parents would never do something like that. I think Wil fabricated the contract. I just haven't found out how."
"Okay." I nod in relief. "I'll look into it. I'll find the evidence. You are not marrying that bastard."
Devyn nods and smiles. "Thank you," he reaches up and pecks me on the cheek before wrapping his arms around my neck while continuing, "for being protective of me. It feels nice."
His words bring a smile to my lips. "Thank you," I return the peck, "for letting me protect you."
"Denzyl." Devyn's eyes narrow seriously as he gazes at me. His next words send me to the moon. "I think I'm falling for you."
