ANASTASIA
My eyes fluttered as the bright sun shined on my face. "Hopefully today will be a better day", I sighed rubbing my face, as I felt the warmth on my skin.
It was the beginning of a new season, so it meant that I had to work even harder and longer to survive. I've been struggling for a while as I hoped for a miracle overnight. It's been hard because my flowers don't grow as they used to. It caused me so much stress because I'm slowly losing my income as the days pass by.
"There are so many things that I need to do", I said forcing myself out of bed. Walking out of my home, I knew that there wasn't much left. "Maybe I should try my luck", I sighed thinking of going to the city. There will be a long day ahead but I know I will survive.
By the position of the sun, I knew that I had enough time to sell on the market and be back home before sunset. Without wasting any time, I took the flowers placing them into the braided basket I made yesterday. "Let's take this for it gets cold tonight.", I said grabbing my scarf before walking off.
Soon I arrived at the city, it was already buzzing around with people from different places trying to sell their stuff. "Hopefully my stand is still available", I murmured. "Anastasia, wait", a voice rang out from behind me.
I rolled my eyes as I knew that I recognized that voice. "Julius", I spoke abruptly. He had a large grin as he walked closer to me. "Hey Anastasia, how have you been doing?", he smiled.
"My day would've been better if I wasn't interrupted", I started dryly. He shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact before speaking up. "I know, I haven't seen you for a while and I was worried something happened. But you look amazing, matter of fact you look stunning", he smiled nervously.
"Oh thank you, Julius. Hopefully you been doing well yourself.", I smiled feeling bad. "Y-yes,", he said as he ran his fingers through his hair.
"I don't know when I will see you again but would you like to watch the sunset with me"
"I'm sorry, Julius. I can't, maybe another time", I stammered walking away.
I knew that Julius had his eyes on me since the first time we met. But I felt like his intentions might not be as pure as he presented them to be. I wasn't sure if he was like everyone else. I've been approached for the pleasure I can give but not for the love I want to have.
All just because of my skin and my body. My skin is something not many people see here in Athene. It's looked down upon because it's darker. Everywhere I go, I get glances but it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.
"Grand rising", I smiled laying down my flowers at their usual spot. "Today will be a busy day because there are many of travelers here for tonight.", the old lady next to me smiled.
"That's such great news", I smiled kindly. Just like the woman said, everything was sold quickly. "There's still time left", I thought as I glanced over to the candle clock. "Here I kept you some fruits and vegetables", the old lady smiled as she put them into my basket.
"Please take this", I smiled handing her the money I've made. "No it's okay darling".
"Please, it's getting harder at this time. We all need it", I smiled. "Thank you", she said with on her face.
"Hopefully we will see you again", I smiled as I walked off. I glanced down at my basket seeing she filled it to the brim. "I have food for a few days now", I said to myself as I started to walk back home. "Maybe I can take the other path today", I said to myself seeing that there was enough time to get home by sunset.
These trees seemed to also lose their flowers as they were supposed to be filled with them around this time. I kept walking, singing to myself to pass the time when I stopped at the open field. "What?", I said confused.
"How is that possible?", I whispered looking at flowers grown on the soil ground. With so many thoughts running through my head, I approached the spot to see a baby laying there. I looked around but there was no one in sight.
"How could they leave you behind", I whispered taking the baby from the ground. The baby giggled as she looked at me with her big brown eyes. They shined bright as the sun glistened on her similar-looking dark skin.
"You must be starving and scared", I said holding her closely. Her little hand caressed my face as she smiled at me with a toothless grin. "You're safe little one", I said walking away with her in my arms.
"Today is my lucky day ", I smiled wrapping her closer to me. "Everything's going to be okay", I smiled looking at her
"Your name will be Antheia, it suits you."
