Marie now scanned the horizon and found the spot out of place. She now began rubbing the water off faster and felt Shell begin to help her, kind of a weird feeling having a guy rub your tail.
Aenon knew what would happen so he tried to make it look casual as he swam toward the sea guard, "Hey, what brings you here? I thought I had another week."
"I did too, but Cynthia is getting restless." He responded looking the young green tail in the eye and readjusting his armor still bigger and just as bulky as Aenon, "how goes it?"
Aenon scratched his neck resisting the strong urge to look back and see if Marie was inside yet, "The kid's stubborn and knows we can't get him as long as he's on land."
"Did you not negotiate with the boy's mother?" The guard was obviously confused and cocked his head.
The elder brother sighed, "I did, there's another woman who's protecting him. She's just as stubborn and loves him like her own son. He's taken refuge with her and I'm trying to get them to trust me so I can take him, but it doesn't look like he'll want to come with us."
This struck the guard as odd and he grew concerned, "She knows?"
He nodded, "Yes but she is not a threat, she is willing to live in peace with merfolk but she does not want anyone forced to do anything."
The guard nodded seeing the problem and tapped his chin, "Hm.... I'm only doing this because you're my younger brother, but be careful. Cynthia is getting restless and wants him, if you can I'd keep him away from the water if he ever wants any hope of a normal life."
The guard patted Aenon on the shoulder with a sympathetic look, "I'll go explain the situation to Cynthia but you better keep that mermaid out of sight as well," he gave his younger green tailed brother a knowing look, "she seems like something from just back here but if you want to keep her you need to protect her from the eyes of others. You're lucky it was me instead of the other guards. I'd hurry up and mate-marry her quick before another higher ranking merman hears about her and stakes a claim."
The green tail sighed slightly frustrated but not for the reason his elder brother thinks, he doesn't feel that way for her! God, why do these people all think that he wants to get it on with Marie?!
He just nodded and looked to the shore where Marie was trying to dry off her shining tail as the moonlight reflected off it and her wavy hair fell over her face as she looked out over the sea. When she looked into the wind and Aenon's breath hitched, God she's beautiful. He wouldn't deny that, but she's the one standing -or kinda swimming- in his way. What surprised him is how he didn't feel as infuriated as he had at first. He'd never accomplish his sent goal, but now he can't go back without his brother, so what does he do now? He can't go back, but if he stays he'll be too tempted to the land and... no.
Marie saw the boys talking and met their eyes as they looked back at her. She knew they'd seen her and now just waited for the verdict. She gave her signature "come and get me grin" to the men as she transformed and ran into the house causing the brothers to laugh and the eldest one to slap Aenon's back and swim off.
As Aenon returned he sighed and spoke to Shell, "He knows and he thinks that I'm only staying here because I want to mate with Marie and they Jamie's being difficult." He groaned, "Why does everyone think that?"
Shell failingly attempted to stifle a laugh, "Maybe because you two look like you really like each other, and I'm not talkin guppy like."
Shell's answer made Aenon slam his hands with a splash in the water and swim to a nearby bolder and lean against it, "I have no idea what your talking about or even mean by that."
