Marie's wild raven curls flew around her whipping in the wind from the open windows. She was singing as loud as her lungs would let her. She jerked the wheel relying on the GPS and instinct to navigate the churning waters. Not only had she been raised reading the waters, but something inside her had never let her down when captaining a vessel.
To the surprise of the boys, Sue joined in singing the same song. Unlike her elder sister, the blonde was a soprano. They complimented each other with Marie's low notes and Sue's high ones, like pieces of a puzzle. The sister's song filled the room and spilled out the windows over the decks and into the sea.
Aenon and Shell didn't know where or why they knew that song from, but the two girls were singing a merfolk song. One of which, just happened to be a mermaid, and now was calming the storm while reading a passage through the rolling, colliding waves. Aenon pulled the blue haired man aside with his eyes still locked on her, "She's doing it dude."
Shell nodded, "Well yeah, it's a basic spell."
The green tail shook his still soaked head, "No. She's affecting this storm. Normally it'd take at least two to calm it."
Shell shrugged seeing no problem with it. If she calmed it, she calmed it. That just meant that Sue would be in less danger, but it was quite odd that Sue knew the song... Who could've taught it to them? Either way it was a spectacular sight to behold.
The rai pelted the glass and poured in through the open windows. Marie turned the wheel and sang paying attention to only the sea before her. She kept the sails folded and let the ocean paths lead her closer to her destination. Her father had taught her this.
She'd spent most of her time with him out on open waters in this very control room. She knew that in the incredibly capable hands of her father this ship named Storm Jumper would make it through anything. She only hoped that in her hands it'd do just as well.
Sue's voice grew raw before her elder sister's. She kept singing though. Her father had been closer with Marie, but he'd taught all his girls this song. When she was small and scared of big storms he'd say "Sing with me and this song will make it all go away". So she sang with him or her sisters whenever something wasn't quite right or terrified her. This case was the latter and this was all she could do.
It was hard to tell when night began and day ended. By the time they'd finally gotten out of the storm it was dark and no distinguishable landmarks were in sight. Marie's now hoarse voice finally stopped singing after hours of persistent song. Both Shell and Aenon were slightly impressed by this. The accidental mermaid had been able to sustain a level of magical output that rivaled a merfolk student's song for a length of time that rivaled a master song. It was nearly as unheard of as a human taking a merchild's powers.
She's really something to watch out for, Aenon concluded.
However awesome her display had been once she finally stopped Marie fell to her knees exhausted. All the tension and strength had vanished from her body and it was all she could do to keep her eyes open. As if broken from their trance the other three all lunged forward to catch Marie's now ashen form. Her little sister looked to the man she believed to be Marie's beau, "Take her back to her room. No need to worry about the ship, I can put it back on autopilot. Focus on your fiancé."
Aenon opened his mouth to contradict her but Shell made eye contact and slightly shook his head. It'd be more of a headache than it's worth to explain it all to her anyway. Once more it was up to him to carry her lifeless form back to her bed. He sighed and lifted her bridal style then leaned her head against his chest.
Aenon had to admit though, she smelled nice. Like lavender really. Luckily this time her door was open and he didn't have to fish through her pockets for a stupid key. Her eyes were open and she could vaguely sense what was going on around her, but Marie really didn't care at that point. She just wanted to be put in bed and sleep for an eternity. She'd done her job and gotten the vessel safely through the storm like she told her sister she would. If there was another catastrophic event then she knew that Sue would wake her, but until then all she wanted to do was sleep.
