Aenon knew when she grinned like that he should be worried. He didn't know what song she wanted to sing, but he knew it would probably be something that will make him look like a fool. He decided to trust her against his better judgment.
Marie grinned wider when her partner hung his head in defeat signaling that she'd won. She grinned as she searched the system for the song she wanted to sing. If they had it this could easily be pretty funny because she knew that she could sing it pretty well and that Aenon would probably catch on pretty fast and give the people a good performance. She'd sang this song once before in front of a crowd with her best friend at the beginning of her high school life. It wasn't long after that her father said she needed to concentrate more on her studies despite being a perfect 4.0 grade average her entire schooling career.
She hadn't given up on seeing her best friend though, he'd just grown up and gotten married already to his high school sweetheart when she'd gotten pregnant with his kid. He was an old soul and Marie still talked to him quite often whenever she could. She loved spending time with him and his beautiful baby girl.
Anyway she found the song and looked up into the bright star speckled sky where she found solace in remembering that concert and how it'd been a hit with the whole community that had attended it. She knew she'd do great and the seaweed eyed guy would probably too.
The surrounding crowd watched the stage in anticipation as to what these two lovely singers would come up with. The fat man had announced that there'd be a tie between the two and they'd split the reward and give them a duet. The air was electrified in excitement as they watched the woman with long wavy dark hair flip through the song listings and pull up the final one. The dark haired man took a microphone and looked around for a second one. The host of the whole thing looked too but couldn't seem to find it either so he shook his head when they looked at him.
Aenon knelt next to where Marie knelt poised to press play on the song choice, "There's not another microphone, what do you want to do?"
"I can project my voice well enough for this crowd to hear, can you? It'll sound really out of balance if one uses the mic and the other doesn't."
He shrugged, "Sure I can."
Odd, he hadn't ever been much of a singer but this was kind of fun. He didn't know the song that she'd chosen but thankfully there were the karaoke lyrics on the screen. Handing the smoker sounding host the mic he nodded to Marie who hit play and stood next to the merman in the middle of the stage. When the intro music began she waited for her cue and flipped her hair over her shoulder as she began the sassy female lines of the song.
Aenon didn't know what she was up to but he bantered back with the male lines and soon got into it despite himself, "Anything you can do I can do better,"
She grinned and walked the length of the stage knowing the lines by heart even circling him once as he began to move about as well but still close enough to see the screen to know the lyrics. The crowd sensed their energy and the older audience members began to laugh and some even sing along. The two were pretty funny and had great antics. They followed the joking song and Marie even made a funny face actually looking sick as she sang, "I can drink it quicker, and get even sicker."
What really surprised the director of this whole competition however was the fact that they could project their voices so well for a couple of novices. Perhaps they weren't novices... were they? Naw, they couldn't be professionals or he'd have heard of them by now. They're just too talented not to be known pretty fast among the producers looking for fresh new talent.
