Chapter 24: The Strongest Piece

   " So, Genevive is due to wake up in a few days? "

    " We're not sure. We think she'll be able to wake up in a few days but we can't tell exactly when. We think it will be in a couple of days, though. "

   " That's great! Thank you, doctor! "

   " Have a good day Ms. Y/n. "

You walked away from the infirmary with a smile on your face. Genevive was due to wake up in a few days and she would be able to get back to living in your shared room. You were excited, that she would be back to normal and be able to stay by your side. It has been busy the past few days, and you were unsure as to why. All you knew was that the palace would be having guests, and they were going to be royals because their rooms were near the royal floor. 

You walked into the kitchen in order to eat lunch before getting straight into work. There were some strawberries, cheeses, and crackers that were left from making a small picnic lunch for the princess and her brother. They were going to travel outside of the palace to have lunch, and they were orders from the princess. You snacked on the extra pieces with other maids coming into the room to take their break. You told them of the exciting news, and they were smiling wide grins. 

Genevive was clumsy but she always made sure everyone had a smile on their face. You would tell the queen later when you both had time. She had confirmed that the divorce would happen and she had a plan to leave the palace, and start a new life somewhere else. She wasn't sure where she would go, but she had a few ideas. You were planning on getting a map and pointing out regions she could go to based on the economic value, the prices of everything in the area, and the weather. 

You wanted to help Aileen in any way you could. Of course, Aileen was going to wait for Genevive to wake up before leaving. That way she could at least make sure she was okay before she left power. It also made you happy to see how much she cares for her friends and everyone in the palace. She was kind to everyone, and she saw everyone as equals in her eyes.

   ' She will be missed here. But sometimes people need to leave. '

Quinn was walking in the snow with his sister. Mariella wanted to have lunch with her brother where no one could hear them, even if it meant eating outside in the snow. Quinne stopped at a tree and set a blanket onto the white ground and set the basket on top of it. Mariella sat down and Quinn sat on the blanket and opened up the basket, bring out variations of cheeses and fruits. He handed his sister a sandwich and she took it from him.

   " Why did you ask to have lunch out here, Mariella? You know I am a busy man and I have a lot of work I need to tend to before tomorrow. "

   " I know, but we needed to have a talk. A talk that must stay between us. "

   " Didn't you say that it's a little late to be acting like brother and sister? "

   " I did say that, but it doesn't matter you are still my brother and I care at least a little for you. So, please just listen. "

Quinn nodded at his sister curious about what secrets she would tell him. It must have been important seeing as they traveled a far distance from the castle and she ordered the guards to stop walking with them a few miles back. He was intrigued by what she would say.

   " Mother is going to leave father. "

   " What? That's preposterous. Why would she leave-"

   " Because she's tired of it, Quinn. She's tired of seeing him torture everyone and yell at her. She doesn't want to see us get hurt anymore, and she's starting to stand up for herself. She's gotten smarter. "

   " She can't just leave. She wouldn't leave us behind. "

   " I know, that's why I'm not sure. I heard it down the grapevine, so I'm not sure if it's true. But she wants to leave our father and travel elsewhere. What will we do if this is true? "

   " I'm not sure. I'll think of a plan. Worst-case scenario we will have to flee the palace. Hopefully, it won't come to that. "

   " Hopefully, I also wanted to check on you. I know that these next few weeks are going to keep you stressed and busy. "

   " I'll be fine. I'm starting to relax a little after father's little episode. "

   " About that, why did you do that? Why did you defy him and ake him so enraged? "

   " Maybe I'm like our mother. I'm tired of being under his iron fist. He is going to step down from the throne and once he does one of us will be the ruler over the empire. If it's me, I can live with that title, as I've been groomed since birth to take it, and I will make sure the kingdom does not live in fear of our family name anymore.
