"Keefe! Get down here!" I could hear my father, Cassius, scream.
"Be a good boy!" my mother, Gisela, added. I snickered. "Good boy" definitely weren't the words someone could describe me with. But, wait...how was my mom here? He dashed down the stairs to see his mother sipping a cup of coffee, leaning on the counter, like it was completely normal for her to be out of prison.
"MOM?! How are you here!?" I screamed, before I could stop myself. My mother, Lady Gisela, had been arrested several months ago, for being part of a mafia called the Neverseen. They had robbed the banks and pulled several heists that leaded to injuries in many people - including my closest friends.. and me. I hadn't missed her one bit - she deserved everything that came to her. But...I couldn't stop myself from stepping a tiny bit closer. Before thinking I asked her the one question I'd been thinking from the day she was convicted. "Why?" I asked quietly.
She sighed and reached for my face. I flinched, and turned away. "It's part of your legacy. I don't expect you to understand now, but you will have to someday. Someday you will have to face your legacy, and you will thank me for it. Trust me," she said softly, almost endearingly. But I wouldn't fall for it again. Those two words, "trust me"? Those were the words she used on me a few months ago. When she threatened me. For my life. I still remember it clearly.
"Mom?" I asked, scared, "What- what are you doing?"
She smiled. "It's nothing, honey. Don't worry about it." She reached for my face and I stepped a tiny bit back.
"Come on, my dear. Trust me," she pleaded softly. She reached for my face again, and this time I leaned towards her.
"Good boy," she approved, smiling. But it wasn't a happy smile. Or an "I'm proud of you" smile. It was more like the smile you saw when a villian from the movies were about to blow up the universe. I realized this a second too late. She pushed me down to the floor, and covered my head with a sack. She then raised her fist to the back of my head. I realized what she was about to do. "Please, mom. Please don't do this," I pleaded. She wouldn't hurt me, her own flesh and blood - right? I was dead wrong. "I'm sorry, baby. Someday you'll understand," she said, sadly. Then everything blacked out.
Before I could stop them, the tears formed in my eyes. I swiped at my eyes quickly, making sure she didn't see them. "Snap out of it, Keefe", I thought, "She doesn't get to do this to you again." And she wouldn't. I wouldn't give her the chance to. I raced out the door, fighting the temptation to sink down to the floor. I don't know how long I ran, or what made me stop, but soon enough, I was at the doors of Foxfire High. Without my consent, my mind wandered to The Mother That Must Not Be Named. "Trust me. Yeah, right," I thought bitterly. I took in a deep breath, walked into the doors of Foxfire and...ran right into someone.
