Scorpius' POV:
I don't know what I was thinking. I saw her walk into the great hall and walk towards her friends and family. I knew they would give her a hard time. I had to help her.
I blindly got up and made my way over to where she was standing. I was vaguely aware of people all around me staring and whispering, but I didn't care. I felt like Rose needed me.
As I approached her, I caught a bit of what they were saying.
"Rose, will you please tell us what's going on now? You've been avoiding us all day. We've been over this! We're family. You can tell us anything," said Hugo. Then Rose mumbled something and walked right into me. Her eyes got really big when she saw it was me.
"Scorpius! Um... I mean, Malfoy! What are you doing here?" she said through her teeth. Great. Now I'm going to get in trouble for trying to help her. Truthfully, I was terrified of Rose. I know what she can do. But I tried to make myself look as calm as possible. Mostly because she looked like she was about to pass out. Like she does before a potions exam.
"I think we should tell them," I said. I don't know why I said it, it just seemed like the right time. Unfortunately it didn't seem like the right time for James. He stood up and looked like he was about to punch a wall.
"Tell us what?" asked James. He seriously needed to calm down. Rose looked up at me.
"Scorp, I thought we were going to wait," she whispered.
"I know you hate keeping secrets. We're telling them. It's better than them finding out on their own," I whispered back. She slumped her shoulders.
"Fine," she muttered. She turned to face her family and friends. That was one thing I envied Rose for. She had so many people who loved her and was always there for her. I had Blake. Not that I don't like Blake, it's just he doesn't get me very well. My parents aren't really the open type either. At least I had Rose now. Well, I might not after what we're about to tell her family and friends. I took her hand for reassurance and she took a deep breath. Everyone raised their eyebrows and exchanged looks at my action, but they didn't say anything.
"Scorpius and I are together," Rose said so quickly I almost didn't here her. I braced myself for the yelling to start, but no one did. Hugo was the only one to speak.
"Dad is going to kill you."
Crap. I forgot all about her famous overprotective dad, Ron Weasley. He had never liked the Malfoys because I guess he and my dad didn't get along when they were at Hogwarts. I never got why we still had to be rivals. So they didn't get along in school? That was then. Why can't they get along now? I never saw anything wrong with the Weasleys and Potters. I just acted like it to fulfill everyone's expectations.
I looked down at Rose. She looked like she was really happy knowing her dad was going to kill her.
"So, you guys aren't mad? Um... James?" said Rose. She looked at James sheepishly. He was standing very still and staring right at me. I couldn't tell what he was thinking which made me nervous. I looked around at everyone else to see their reactions. Albus seemed okay with it, since he had gone back to eating. Rose's friends, Savannah, Kyra, Isabelle, and Kacey, we talking quietly in a circle. Savannah kept turning her head to glare at me. Lily was trying to talk to Hugo, who looked ready to kill me. Danny... He looked defeated. Disappointed. I realized with a jolt that maybe he had feelings for Rose, and I took her away. I felt guilty about it, but not guilty enough to let go of Rose.
I looked back at James. He was still eyeing me, like he was trying to figure me out. He was starting to make me feel uncomfortable and Rose noticed.
"James..." she said. She hesitantly walked towards him. He stayed still. "Look, I know you may not like it, but I'm happy. And if you're mad about us keeping it a secret we only started dating this morning," said Rose. James stared at me for another few seconds and then turned and walked right out of the great hall. Rose slumped down onto the bench beside Lily, who wrapped her arms around her as Rose started to cry. I wanted to be the one comforting her, but I didn't know how, again. I sat down beside her, which was also beside Hugo so I had to be extra careful. I took her hand and started rubbing little circles with my thumb on the back of her hand. Lily started whispering soothing words to Rose that I couldn't quite make out.
We sat like that for a few minutes before Albus got up.
"I'll go talk to James. Uh, sorry, Mal- er, Scorpius. James doesn't really like you," he said.
"Don't worry about it. I get that a lot." Albus nodded and walked out of the great hall. Rose sniffled.
"I'm sorry, Scorp. Now he's going to hate you," she said. I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.
"Don't worry. He'll come 'round." But I wasn't sure about that myself.
