Scorpius' POV:
I was so happy about finally having Rose as a friend I was barely aware of anything happening around me. Everyone was catching up with their friends and telling stories of what had happened over the summer. I wasn't talking to anyone. I kept glancing at the Gryffindor table, trying to get a glimpse of red hair. I thought I saw Rose once, but it was just her cousin, Lily. That is, until I moved my eyes beside Lily. Rose was sitting beside her. She seemed happy, smiling like a maniac. I don't think I have ever seen her that happy, well, not around me anyway.
"Scorp! What is it with you? You have been so distracted since we got off the train and you keep staring at the Gryffindor table! Why? And don't say 'nothing'," Blake demanded. I sighed. I wasn't going to get out of this one.
"Can you keep a secret?" I asked.
"Of course. You can tell me anything, Scorp, you know that."
"Okay. Fine, I'll tell you. Just promise not to tell anyone."
"I promise. Now tell me what all this is about," said Blake, impatiently.
"Well, when I went for a walk on the train, I actually went to look for someone," I started.
"Who?"
"Rose."
"Rose Weasley? You can't be serious! You guys have hated each other since the day you met!"
"Yeah, well, I haven't. I... Um... Kind of... mbike der," I mumbled.
"What?"
"I kind of mike ter."
"What?"
"I like her, alright! I really like Rose Weasley," I said quietly. Blake just stared at me in shock.
"Since when?" He finally said.
"End of last year. "
"How?"
"Her smile. Haven't you seen it? It's the most beautiful smile in the world," I said dreamily. Blake just looked at me like I had gone mad.
"You really like her?"
"Yeah, I do. The best part is, is that on the train, when I finally found her, I apologized. I apologized for everything I had said and done to her in the past five years, and she forgave me," I finished, still disbelieving it myself. Blake just stared at me blankly for a few seconds before saying,
"I'm happy for you, Scorp. I will keep your secret. I'll help," he smiled. I smiled back greatfully.
"Thank you so much, Blake. You're the greatest friend anyone could have."
"Hey, don't mention it, mate. What are friends for?" At that moment the doors to the great hall opened and in came Professor Longbottom leading the first years, who looked scared out of their minds. Professor Longbottom led the first years up to the front of the hall, in front of the teacher's table. He stopped beside a stool with a raggedy, worn-down hat sitting on it. Suddenly, the hat came to life and began to sing.
"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me..."
The sorting hat kept singing the song. I wasn't really paying attention. I was staring at Rose. It still shocked me that she was actually my friend now. I was pulled out of my thoughts when the great hall erupted into applause. The hat had finished its song. Professor Longbottom pulled out a scroll and unrolled it.
"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," he said. "Adams, Alana!"
A girl with red hair that curled down her back stumbled forward. She reminded me so much of Rose I almost laughed aloud.
"RAVENCLAW!" shouted the hat. Alana took of the hat and skipped to the Ravenclaw table and sat down.
"Blair, Kelsey," announced Professor Longbottom.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat again, and Kelsey went to join the Hufflepuff table.
The sorting kept going on, but I zoned out. I only came out of my revere to cheer for someone to that got sorted into Slytherin. I was still thinking about Rose and how we were going to keep our friendship from her family. It was going to be difficult, but I was willing to take the risk.
When the sorting was finished, we had gained 10 new Slytherins. Gryffindor gained 12, Hufflepuff gained 11, and Ravenclaw gained 10. Professor McGonagall said the usual announcements: the Forbidden Forest was off limits, term starts tomorrow, no pranks. I swear she looked right at Rose's brother, Hugo, and her cousin James when she said that. She finished her speech and the feast appeared. All the first years were a bit surprised and others just stared at the food with wide eyes and opened mouths. I laughed, remembering what that was like when I first came to Hogwarts. Everyone feasted until we were full, and all the food was replaced with delicious desserts. I piled some apple tart and pumpkin pie onto my plate and dug in. I forgot how much I loved Hogwart's feasts.
When everyone was finished, we were dismissed for bed. Everyone was drowsy and content and we drifted dreamily from the hall. I ditched Blake and hung back a little to wait for Rose. I prayed that her family wasn't with her. Luckily they had gone ahead because she wanted to ask Professor McGonagall about her classes. She was way to obsessed with school. I was waiting for her when she walked out of the great hall.
"You didn't have to wait on me, you know," she said, laughing.
"I know, but I wanted to say goodnight to my new best friend," I said. She gave me that dazzling smile I loved.
"You have the most beautiful smile, Rose," I said. It kind of just came out. Normally I wouldn't say that kind if thing. It startled her a little and her cheeks went pink. Her's weren't the only ones.
"Um... Thank you, Scorpius," she stuttered. I gave her a little smile. She returned it.
"I better go. Everyone will be looking for me," she said. I was disappointed because I didn't want her to go.
"Ok. I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Definitely," she promised. She then did something I was not expecting. She gave me a hug. I wrapped my arms around her. I never wanted to let go, but she pulled back."Bye, Scorp."
"Bye, Rose." Then she turned and left. I don't know how long I stood there. All I knew is that Rose had hugged me.
