Scorpius's POV:
When I woke up, I immediantly thought of Rose. I wanted to see her before classes so I got up and dug through my trunk until I found my robes. I pulled them on over my pajamas and raked a hand through my hair. I shoved all my books, spare parchment, and a couple quills into my bag. Then I took one last look around before I left the dormitory. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I found the common room deserted. No, it wasn't deserted. It was packed with silent people staring at me.
Oh, yeah. Cara.
I saw Cara in the corner of the room with some of her bratty friends. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying. At least it looked like she had been crying. Half of me hoped she had been punched.
The silence kept getting longer and longer. Was it possible for a room full of teenagers to be quiet this long?Their icy stares were making me uncomfortable. I also really needed to see Rose. I decided to break the silence.
"Good morning!" I said cheerfully. I gave the room a wide smile before walking out the portrait hole. Glad I'm out of there. They were all starting to look like statues.
I walked quickly down the corridor and made my way towards the great hall. Hopefully she was alone and I could talk to her easily. I needed to tell her about Cara and that Blake knows about our friendship.
I was about two corridors away from the great hall when I heard crying. It was very faint, but someone was definitely crying. I rounded a corner and started walking closer to the sound of crying. It was coming from a broom cupboard. I reached out to turn the handle, but then I stopped myself. What if it was just a wimpy first year who is just homesick? What was I supposed to do for them? But it could be someone I knew. Before I could stop myself again, I turned the handle and peeked inside.
It was Rose.
"Rose? What's wrong? Why are you in a broom cupboard?" I asked. She looked up and then sobbed harder. I stepped inside and pulled the door closed before sitting down beside her. I rubbed her arm awkwardly to try and comfort her. I wasn't really good at comforting people. One time, in my fifth year, I found a first year Slytherin crying in a corner because he didn't want to be in Slytherin. I tried to comfort him but it just ended in me yelling at him to stop crying. That didn't go to well.
I kept rubbing her arm until she calmed down. When she did I asked again, "Rose, what's wrong?"
"Well, where do I start? I woke up to the girls being mad at me then Savannah punched me and broke my nose. Then a lot of staring," she said. She then told me in detail everything that had happened to her that morning.
"Wow... That's a lot more eventful than my morning. If it makes you feel better, there was a lot of staring toward me as well," I said. She turned her head up to look at me.
"Who stared at you? Why?" she asked. I should've known this topic would come up. I sighed.
"The whole Slytherin house was staring at me when I came down from my dorm this morning. Why? Because I finally stood up to Cara. I'm the one who is known either to be a bully or to ignore bullying. Never to stand up to it. Cara deserved it though. And I think it's taking a toll on her. Which I'm not to unhappy about," I said. Rose started laughing at the last part. Then that got me laughing and we couldn't stop. It made me feel good I could make her laugh when she was so upset. She laid her head on my shoulder.
"Thank you, Scorpius. I needed that."
"I needed it too. Are you ready to go back into the great hall now? If you don't want to sit with your friends and family you could always sit at the Slytherin table with me," I said hesitantly. Yeah right, like she would ever sit at the Slytherin table.
"Really? You'd let me do that?" she said, her eyes wide.
"Why not? Only if you want to, that is."
"Yes, please! I'm terrified of facing them now. They'll be so angry with me." she said. "I don't get why they have such a big problem with you. Yes, maybe our parents weren't the best of friends, but why can't we be friends? We're different than they were! I don't care what anyone else thinks. I like you, Scorpius, and I want to be your friend," she said confidently. I smiled. She was so beautiful.
"I would love to be your friend, Rose. Now, can we please go back in the great hall? I'm starving. I want something to eat before classes start," I said. I stood up and offered a hand to her to help her up. She smiled and took it and I pulled her up. I didn't let go of her hand as we walked out of the broom cupboard and down the corridor toward the great hall. I didn't know what was going on between us, but I didn't care. I felt like the happiest guy in the world just having Rose as a friend. Nothing could ruin my mood.
Except for the whole entire great hall.
When we walked in hand in hand, everyone looked at us and stared and was silent. More staring. Just what we needed. I looked at Rose and watched her beautiful smile melt off her face. I saw her eyes tear up. I bent down and whispered in her ear.
"On second thought, maybe I can starve. That's better than getting stared at more." She nodded and I pulled her out of the great hall. As soon as we were out the doors, we heard the great hall erupt into murmers and whispers. So much for keeping our friendship a secret. Now the whole school knows. And it probably didn't look to good since we were holding hands. I heard Rose take in a shaky breath beside me.
"Well, that was a disaster. Sorry you didn't get breakfast," she said, giving me a small smile.
"That's okay. Breakfast is overrated," I shrugged. She laughed shakily and reached up and wiped her eyes. I stopped and pulled her around to look at me. I stared into her beautiful brown eyes that were filled with tears and pain and hurt. I wiped the tears off of her cheeks.
"Rose, I don't care what anyone else thinks. All I care about is your happiness. I hate seeing you like this. So please, can you give me one of your beautiful smiles?" I said. She smiled.
"That's better," I said and returned the smile.
"Scorpius, I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship. You are so much different than I thought you were. Your truly amazing," she said. My heart nearly flew out of my chest. I felt like jumping up and down and dancing, but I played it cool.
"I know," I shrugged. She giggled. I looked into her eyes again, getting lost in them for the second time today.
Then, without thinking, I kissed her.
