"Hey, Emma, turn around again for a second!"
"What is it? Can't it wait?" Emma wasn't in any mood to do much that day. She had been sick and more tired than in the days after the arrival, all of them had. They accounted that to their confinement to the boxes and the lack of exercise affecting their circulatory system.
"I think I've seen something on your back. Left side. I can't be sure like this." Slowly Mary coaxed Emma to turn around and to let Kathrine have a good look at whatever it was that was on her back.
"So is there anything? Or do you just want to make me even more uncomfortable?" Emma asked testily, she was rather short tempered and even more so as she couldn't work off her frustration through workout.
"I-I think you shouldn't lay down on that side for a while. You've got something called a pressure necrosis on your shoulder. I've seen this on old people in the care home where I used to work when they weren't moved often enough. Nathalie, can you see it if I lay down flat?" Nathalie nodded. "Have a look and see if I have got any, please?"With one look at Katherines backside she could tell that she hadn't evaded them. "There's something like a big purple blotch on your lower back. It just looks like a blue mark though, nothing as bad as Emma's."
"Let's hope it is then"
Not wanting to anger or worry Emma any further she whispered her next question to Katherine. "What can we do about Emma? Her shoulder looks like it is infected. It is oozing and, well, can you smell it?"
"Yes, it's horrible. I've had patients with pressure necrosis that have died because they left it unattended for too long."
"What is a necrosis anyway?"
"Part of your body just dies. Not enough nutrients, not enough oxygen, take your pick. The cells can't be repaired anymore. If you are lucky the part just dries up and falls off but it can turn very nasty, get infected and poison you."
"Then can we do anything for her?"
"Not really. We all have to make sure not to put pressure on the same spots regularly." She giggled and Nathalie raised an eyebrow at her. "You know, we have to make sure that we turn around – like a roasted chicken that mustn't be burned but turned around and around. We are the chicken!" With that she giggled manically again.
Over a freshly arrived load of tasteless pellets Nathalie informed Louise and made sure that their group rotated like the literal roasted chicken.
