"... really I thought it was just a regular period, you know how bad the cramps can get! So I thought, alright, I just have to tough it out, nothing I can do about it now except asking for a pain killer. I wasn't going to walk out of that exam just because of some cramps!" Emely looked at the other girls expectantly and Helen asked the obvious question:
"But they must have been really bad, how in the world have you been able to concentrate?!"
"Well unfortunately I have always had much problems with my period, really heavy bleeding and serious cramps and migraine and vomiting and all that so I got used to it at some point. I couldn't just keep swallowing pain killers, apart from being bad for one's health most of them just weren't strong enough anymore. So I got through the exam and got straight home. There was no blood when normally there is blood before the pain so I got worried and went to my GP and from there I was directly carted off to the hospital for an emergency appendix removal. When the teacher heard about that he was really shocked that I had made it through the exam with a broken appendix. Apparently he had his appendix removed some years ago and thought that it was the worst pain he had to go through all his life and couldn't fathom that I would mistake it for a period! I mean the man is a husband and a father, his wife has her period too! How can he not know?"
They had had a vivid conversation that jumped from one topic to the next quicker and easier than Nathalie would have thought possible. Gossip from school, university, work and neighbourhood was exchanged and laughed about just as much as silly stories about how the dog had gotten stuck in the toilet seat, ripped it off and run about the house with it. Even the story about the faux period cramps that had turned out to be a serious medical condition had made them all laugh and shake their heads about that teacher. However, it had given Nathalie food for thought. She herself hadn't had her period since before the concert.
