That evening Helen and Emely kept watch while the other girls drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
"Have you had... you know... your monthlies... since you've been here... at all I mean?" The quiet voice of Emely reached Helen across the table that separated them. She sounded worried. Now that Helen thought about it, she too was astounded that it hadn't returned yet. Usually her cycle was very regular, like clockwork, and not generally affected by stress or physical exhaustion.
"Now that you mention it, no, I haven't."
Neither of them had thought about their period since Larissa had turned their conversation to other topics.
"Do you remember what Mary said? That stress can delay a period? I have heard that too. In a video about Jean of Arc it said that she never ever had hers because she was fighting in war all the time. That must have been stressful. But we have been here so long already! Surely it would have come back by now! I mean, we have been taken at the very least two months ago, more like four months ago when what Lou says is true."
Louisa had tried to calculate how many days had passed as accurately as possible soon after arriving and made them all keep a mental count of the days that passed. There were variables that they could not determine however and at some point they had lost count completely and could not be sure anymore how many days it had been even for them to be in the boxes. Having been drugged repeatedly during the first time when they had all awoken in the big white sphere hadn't helped keep count either.
Helen looked at Emely thoughtfully.
"Maybe they have done something to us that prevents us from having our period?"
Emely shivered.
"You mean like make us infertile? Or suppress it like with the pill?"
"Hm... no. Not infertile. More like the opposite. Do you remember that in the beginning the came and ... invaded us? Maybe they did more than just 'test our temperature'." The last bit was said in a rather sarcastic tone of voice and was accompanied by a meaningful look.It became clear to Emely what Helen was insinuating. She blanched and started taking quick, shallow breaths. Tears were welling up in her eyes and when she next spoke her voice was distorted by horror and disgust.
"NO! They can't have! They can't have done that to us! No no no no no no..." She curled her arms around her torso, pulled her knees further forward and rocked forwards and backwards, sobs tearing through her. Helen couldn't get another sensible word out of her at all during that night. Breaking the news – or rathe her deduction – to the rest of the group in the morning would not be easy.
