"... I'd been stuck out in the sticks because of a malfunctioning train. There was nothing except for the station – not even mobile data. We had both been to the same lecture so I went up to him to see whether he knew any more than I did about when the next train would come and what his plans were and then we just continued on talking about the lecture and about the weather and on and on and well – that's all that there is to say about it really. I asked him for his number and we met again and then at one point we moved in together."
"Tell us something really silly that you did together!" Emely requested.
"Something weird you did!"
"Something funny!"
"Something embarrassing!"
"Something romantic he did for you!"
"Something cute!"
The other women were now all talking at once, apparently energised by the recounting of such normal events. But even amidst the cheerfulness there was always caution that was palpable. None of them dared to shout out loud or move too much, afraid of alerting the monsters. Like children not daring to have a limb sticking out over the edge of the mattress in fear of provoking the wrath of the demons that surly housed in the dark space underneath the bed. Only, they knew that the monsters were real and they knew exactly that the monsters would do if they were to make too much of a ruckus. Just a few days ago a woman in the line of boxes behind what was now called "Louise's side" had woken from what had apparently been a terrible nightmare. What started with moaning and groaning had soon advanced to unarticulated screams of terror. It took some time for the monsters to arrive. The first modus operandi had been to shock the woman. When neither that nor the ensuing shocks did anything but elicit more screaming the woman had been taken from the box. It had been the first time any of them had seen anyone getting out of the box. It hadn't done the woman any good however. Her screams had still been audible for some time, then intensified until they suddenly stopped altogether. A short time later the woman was brought back to her box, mute and without struggling. She hadn't uttered a single word since then. She only ate and drank and slept. By now the lower half of the woman was covered in her own faeces as she didn't take care of lowering her bottom over the stair anymore. She lay and slept on her front, apparently not feeling uncomfortable by laying down on her front.
Talking about partners, about their experiences, whether they had been in a relationship when they had been taken, why they had come to the concert, with whom, what kind of girls and guys they liked, about the family planning as though they were still at home and just a group of friends meeting up and catching up helped them get through the days that were separated only by the regular passing of the dung scraper.
