Khai hated planes, but this one didn't seem so bad, and there was one simple reason for that. This was the plane that would take her to Sam.

As much as she hated to admit it, Khai was so in love with Sam it hurt. And now they were going to convince everyone they were dating. Like something out of a movie.

Khai had spent so much time longing for what she was about to pretend to do. It hurt a little that it was fake, but it could be enough for her.

Anger burned from within her when she remembered why all this was happening. Her mother. How could she do something so dangerous? Khai wanted to throw up.

She settled into her seat on the plane and fell asleep.

( . . . )

They had only been in the car five minutes and Khai already wanted out. She thought she had been able to do it, but looking at him as he drove, she realised pretending to date him would be so much harder than she had thought.

Her phone buzzed as she was trying to sneak another glance at him, and she pulled it out of her pocket, turning it on to check the notification. She read it and immediately grimaced, turning her phone back off.

Sam glanced at her, and then back at the road. "Your mom?"

"Mhm." Khai replied, looking out the window. She felt like she was going to throw up.

Sam reached over and grabbed her hand, giving it a squeeze. "It's all going to be fine, Kay."

Khai felt her cheeks reddening at the contact and snatched her hand away, setting it in her lap. Hopefully Sam would chalk it up to nerves.

"Sorry." She muttered after a moment of silence. "I'm just stressed."

Sam snorted. "Yeah, I'd imagine."

"Really? Because you'd think being rumoured to have a girlfriend in a small conservative town would be so easy." Khai teased with a grin. Sam shook his head.

"Well now we have to convince everyone you have a boyfriend. It's going to be so hard. I'm way out of your league." Sam replied, earning him a joking slap across the back of his head.

"You're not funny." Khai rolled her eyes, but she was fighting a smile. "If anything, I'm out of your league."

"Yeah, you are." Sam said.

Khai blinked, brain coming to a stop, making Sam burst out laughing.

"Jesus, you're so flustered! You don't get complimented enough."

"Shut up." Khai groaned, covering her incredibly red face. "Die."

"Ok, darlin'." Sam said, fighting a laugh.

"Stop. Stop this." Khai replied, muffled from her hands.

"What, darlin'?" Sam tested, watching as Khai grew more and more red. "You really get that flustered over a word?"

"I hate you. I'm getting out of the car. Take me back to the airport." Khai groaned.

"Whatever you say," Sam grinned, "darlin'."
