Khai almost cried at the way Sam's mom welcomed her into the home, giving her a hug and a kiss on the forehead. It was so unlike what she had grown up with. She loved it. Insanely much.

Her and Sam escaped into the back garden while his mom started making lunch, and they sat on the step of the patio, shoulders brushing.

"I have to see my family tonight. For dinner." Khai mumbled.

Sam frowned. "Already?"

She nodded. "Can't leave Jas alone any longer." She said with a stiff laugh. "Can you- can you come with me?"

Sam looked down at her. "You sure?"

"I mean... yeah." She mumbled. "Thank you for doing this. Like, the whole boyfriend thing. Thank you."

"Anything to help you." He replied, and Khai finally looked up to meet his eyes. Her gaze flickered to his lips, noticing how he seemed to be leaning in. Her heart was pounding as she matched his movement, craning her head up.

"Sam! Khai! Lunch's ready!" Sam's mom called from the kitchen, and the two jumped away suddenly, Khai swallowing and looking away awkwardly as they started to walk into the house.

Khai couldn't even think straight. Sam couldn't have been trying to kiss her. That wouldn't happen.
