Khai packed all her stuff and got a taxi to the hotel in town, the only one in such a small town, but it was only until she could get a flight.

sam
khai
where are you?
what's going on?

She said didn't open the messages, reading them from the notifications tab and then turning her phone off. She felt like a bad person. She was a bad person.

sam
i just read the letter
don't leave
just come back so we can talk
you're probably ignoring these so i'll just talk
i love you too and i always have and i always will
it hurt so much when you ghosted me especially because i had no clue why.
i could never hate you.
i walked out because i was overwhelmed
a little pissed you ghosted me instead of talking to me
but i don't care
i love you
i love you khai
i'm in love with you

Khai had muted Sam's notifications. She knew he was going to text her. She couldn't deal with that.

Khai had been picking at the skin around her fingernails and now blood was seeping from her thumb.

Sapnap was right.

She felt her eyes start to water. God. What was wrong with her? Why did she feel such a need to fuck up everything?

She dialed Sam's number, letting it ring out. No answer. Great. Everything was fucked. She could leave a voice mail though.

"Hi. Sam. I- uh- I'm sorry. I keep fucking everything up. I shouldn't have left. I don't know. I'm at a hotel until I can get a flight. You didn't pick up so I'll take that hint. But. Goodbye. I guess."

Khai pocketed her phone, fidgeting. She was so pissed at herself she couldn't think straight. She stood up, deciding to go for a walk.

Rain poured, not uncommon for winter in Texas, but Khai didn't bring an umbrella. She loved the feeling of rain. She put her hands in the pocket of her hoodie- well. Sam's hoodie. Her friends were mad at her, and rightfully so. Sam was mad at her, again, rightfully so. If he had ghosted her for that reason she'd be equally pissed. She didn't know where her head was at and she didn't know what she was doing.

She stood under a tree, pulling out her phone. Everything was telling her not to check Sam's texts. It would just make this harder. She knew she shouldn't.

Surprise, she did.

Her breath hitched as she read the messages, nose stinging as it always did before she cried. Oh god. He loved her? He- he felt the same?

She inhaled sharply as a tear fell. She had fucked this up so much.

She went to text him, but her phone died. She let out a harsh laugh that turned into a sob. The universe hated her.

Ok. Ok. She could do this. She knew his number. The only number she had ever memorised. She stepped out from under the tree, pocketing her phone again; and walked up to the first person she saw, this elderly woman.

"Excuse me?" Khai asked. "I'm so sorry, but could I please use your phone? It's an emergency."

"Oh dear!" The woman said, looking concerned at Khai's puffy face, tears still falling mixing with the rain. "Of course!" She handed Khai the phone. "Are you okay?"

Khai looked up from dialling his number. "Not really." She admitted, and the lady gave her a sad smile before Khai turned back to the phone. It rang out, once, twice, and Khai felt her heart sink. Fuck.

"Hello?" Sam's familiar voice rang through the line and Khai let out a breath of relief, a sob catching in her throat.

"Sam-" She managed to get out. "I-"

"Khai? Oh my God. Khai. Where are you? What- the letter-"

Khai laughed through tears. "I fucked up Sam. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I-"

"It's okay, Khai. Just- where are you?"

"Outside this fuckin' restaurant? I don't know- Let me just... check the sign..." Khai craned her neck. "It's a steakhouse. I don't know."

"A steakhouse? Is it just off Main Street?"

"Yeah! It is! It's like, right from the corner?"

"Are you wearing my hoodie?" He asked.

Khai glanced around. "How even? Where-"

She locked eyes with him, at the end of the empty road, standing there in the rain. Khai inhaled, gaping, before remembering herself. She hung up and gave the phone back to the woman. "Thank you. So much. Thank you." She said, before taking off down the street, hair soaking.

All she could think about was him.

She collided into him, wrapping him into a hug, gasping for air. She was not very good at running, but the burn in her throat didn't matter as he ran his hands through her hair, breathing just as heavy as her, leaning down and nestling his head in her neck. "God. Khai, don't do that again."

She pulled away, still holding his hands, looking up at him, drops of rain running down her face. "I love you. I love you. I'm so sorry. I love you." He leaned down until his forehead was touching hers and they looked into each other's eyes, savouring the moment.

"I love you, Khai." He said, placing his hand under her chin and tilting her head up, pressing his lips to hers, their lips moving against each other in perfect sync. She moved her hands into his hair, and he moved his hands to her waist, and everything seemed perfect.

She no longer felt like she was fucking everything up.
