Jays POV
_________________________
I was kicked in the back and as I shook off the attack, I turned with my fists up and saw a shadowy figure standing behind me, ready to fight. "Hello," came the nasally voice from within the woman. She had gray hair and dark eyes. She also was dressed in a weird kimono thing and had a crazy smirk on her face.
Lloyd took a step forward, placing himself in front of myself. "What are you doing in here?"
The figure chuckled and ran her finger along the edge of the bookshelf. "I need a book." She slyly looked at Lloyd. "The real reason, boy, is why are you in here?"
"We are investigating a break in!" I spoke up. "Apparently we found the culprit!" I put my fists a bit higher.
"Apparently so," she agreed, turning her head to look at the dusty books before her. I took a step toward her, narrowing my eyes as she paused with her gloved finger on a title of one. Lloyd put his arm back and stopped my advancement.
"What book did you come for?" The green ninja questioned the woman. He watched with squinted eyes as she chuckled deeply, her finger making a line in the dust between the alarm lasers.
"Wouldn't you like to know, little boy," she cockily addressed the ninja in green. She seemed to giggle to herself before quick as a cat she snatched a book off the shelf. She sniffed the pages, which I found super creepy, and then let out a horrific giggle. Lloyd made his move and punch toward the woman but she hit his hand away with an umbrella on her arm. He tested her again by faking another punch only to kick by her side. That was again directed away from her skin with her umbrella.
"Now now," she tutted. "Wouldn't want the kid to get hurt."
"Don't call him that!" I huffed at her. I stepped forward and did a quick ground kick her way to trip her and when she dodged that, I also tried a punch. Again, the umbrella was used and she seemed to be bored of our attacks.
The book was in her grasp still and she slowly crept into the shadows behind her. Lloyd and I approached her, her being cornered by the two greatest ninja. Just as we were about to strike, (I was going to use an attack I call the Lighninja,) she threw something on the ground in front of us. Smoke filled the area and for a second I forgot to breathe.
"Jay?" Lloyd called out. I reached my arms out, trying to feel where the Green Ninja just was.
"Lloyd?"
The woman laughed, the sound echoing around the books on the shelves and suddenly the entire place felt darker. I tried again to reach the ninja in green but couldn't see anything except the endless shelves of dusty books behind me.
In a few seconds the smoke cleared as quickly as it came and the woman was nowhere insight. Her fingerprints were still shown on the dust and the book she was holding was also gone.
Great. We let her escape with a book.
"Lloyd?" I called out again, scanning the clear library now for the Green Ninja.
"Jay?"
I turned around and Lloyd was coming up behind me. "I chased her but she managed to get away," the Green Ninja complained. His suit had a bit of dust on him and he looked a little out of breath.
"How did you see her?" I questioned the kid. "That smoke was so bad!"
Lloyd shrugged, sighing as he glanced toward where the missing book was supposed to be. "As soon as the smoke bomb was thrown I ran toward the window, figuring she would go out the same way she came in. And she did." His eyes narrowed. "She was too quick."
"But we are ninja!" I gasped. "We are supposed to be quick!"
Lloyd nodded. After a few minutes, he pulled the piece of paper off the floor with the list of the books on it. "What book did she take?" he asked me, holding out the now wrinkled paper. I grabbed it from him and scanned the list, looking up every now and then to try to see which title looked familiar and which one would be missing.
It took me a minute but I managed to point it out to my teammate. He glanced at the name and then the shelf. "What would she want with that book?" he wondered to me. "Specifically 'The Book of Mirroring Lives.'" The ninja of green began walking toward the door and I followed suit, ignoring the creepy feeling of the old books and the smell they were emitting.
I narrowed my eyebrows and looked at the name once more. "It sounds really familiar," I had to admit to the Green Ninja. A memory came flashing back to me of my dad coming into the trailer and shouting for Edna. I remember the book being open on the table and as I scurried over to look at it, my mom told me I shouldn't read it.
"I think I saw this book before!" I confessed to the Green Ninja. "It showed up at the junkyard one day and my parents were really concerned and they called the cops. Of course when the police showed up my mom had to offer cookies and coffee and then they stayed for a long time, but that was okay because I got to test out the cops taser and then one spilled coffee on the couch that my mom had just dry cleaned and-"
I was interrupted by Lloyd coughing a bit to get my attention. "Sorry Jay, but I have no idea where you are going with this." He opened the door into the fresh air and although it was still dark outside, I felt much better getting out of the creepy library.
"What I am saying is that when my dad found the book and read a bit, he realized it was a bad, evil, yet a super old book. The police must have donated it to the library because it was old. The library might have been holding the book without even knowing the extent of the evilness. I know my dad was pretty shaken up when he had read it. The police told him it was great he found it though, because apparently it was an old historical artifact."
"Would your parents remember what it said inside and why this woman might have taken it?"
I nodded at the green ninja and watched as Cole jogged over. I took out my earpiece. "Dad was pretty shaken up." I handed my piece to the ninja and Lloyd did the same. Cole put them into a little container.
Lloyd turned to me. "Then we know our next move."
"What's that?" Cole asked, hearing the last sentence. "Where are we going?"
"To Jay's parents."
"Ahh." The earth ninja had a twinkle in his eye. "Nya is going to love that."
"Shut it, dirt eater."
"After you, Zapbag."
