How do you tell an emotional, troubled fire ninja that he is being way to-
Way to-
Way to emotional and troubled?
I sighed in frustration, looking at the fire ninja with a glare as he crossed his arms. I remembered a proverb that Sensei Wu once told me. "Our patience will achieve more than our force." I forced myself to calm down, knowing that blowing up would do nobody good.
I spoke. "Really Kai? First you question my every word and then you act like a child by not putting on your ninja hood?" I pulled my own hood off and brushed my hair to the side. "Can you please speak your mind because obviously something is amiss." I glanced overboard and saw the other ninja landed safely. "The others are already landed and at work. We need to figure this out quick."
Kai glared at me and huffed. "You want Domonique to learn so why can't she come with us."
"Do you want her to get hurt?" I asked the ninja beside me.
"No."
"She is still putting her thumb inside her fingers when she makes a fist!" I exclaimed to Kai. "She is nowhere ready to go into action!" The fire ninja huffed again. "Kai, remember she isn't training to become a ninja. I am teaching her self defense so if things really go south she can hold her own for a few minutes."
"If you want her to learn, put her on the field."
I quietly breathed out and in. "She isn't going to be a ninja, Kai. It is better for her to stay with Nya in the control room and learn all the buttons. That is where she will be the most useful in the future, so that Nya can come on more missions. Right now we are having to switch Zane and Nya around so that one can stay in the Bounty. They never go on missions together, if you haven't noticed."
Kai was silent for a second. He glared once again. "You are just babying Domonique."
"No. I am saying this one more time. She is not training to be a ninja."
Kai was not happy with my answer and made it known with violently punching part of the deck. He leaned on it, then took a second and breathed out. He turned and nodded toward me, calming down a bit. "Okay."
I did a small smile. Okay! We are making progress!
We stood in silence for a minute, watching the police lights flash around the library. The clouds seemed to reflect the flashing lights.
Now came the tough talk. "Kai, you disrespected me in front of the ninja. That can't happen." I turned toward the fire ninja. "You know I like it when you guys put out your ideas and ask questions on my decisions. I encourage it as it makes me think my plans over again." I pushed my hair out of my eyes again. "But this time, it was too much."
"You just said you encouraged it!" Kai pointed out, talking in a gruff voice. His eyes snapped to mine and I marveled how the one eye was split down the middle perfectly, with green on the one side and blue on the other. It really did match his half head of white blond, blue and green hair.
I nodded toward the fire ninja. "Yes, but you're tone is what made a difference." I made sure his eyes were still on me. "You were rude and disrespectful."
Kai nodded slowly. "I was a little worked up."
"I understand that but you really need to take a moment and think."
The fire ninja didn't say anything to that, but since there was no screaming or fireball throwing I figured that we had solved the matter. The ninja put his hood on and nodded toward me before jumping over the side of the Bounty. I followed suit.
We reached the library and landed in a few seconds. Zane was scanning by the front door and Jay was patiently talking to an officer to get more intel. Kai flipped toward the canopy with the other officers to help patrol the area. Meanwhile, I walked toward the blue ninja who was just finishing a conversation with the donut eating cop.
"Thanks for your help!" He waved the man off. Jay turned to me. "Pretty much the alarms went off around an hour ago and the police instantly surrounded the building. They believe the person inside is after some super old books in the north corner of the building." Jay pointed to a window. "They think the thief got in through that window because the doors are still locked."
I nodded. "Could it have been a book that just fell or a rat?"
Jay shook his head. "The surveillance camera caught a shadowed figure. The figure was making his way toward the north corner, but the cameras are down in that section right now for maintenance." The ninja froze for a second. "Or girl. Could have been a woman." I am sure he was thinking of Ember.
Cole jogged up to us, handing us two earpieces and placing his own into his own left ear. "These are linked to the Bounty and the police walkies," he stated. "The perimeter looks good. You guys are ready to go?"
I nodded at the earth ninja and turned toward the lightning ninja. He gave Cole a thumbs up and started walking toward the front door.
Sure, the thief went through the window, but we have the keys.
The door creaked open and I entered before Jay. The lights were off, obviously, and we slowly sneaked through the foyer and into the building. The books seemed dark and gloomy and it was weird and slightly creepy going through the aisles without the lights on. Going through the adult section and checking all the nooks and crannies, we swept the teen aisle. Then, we passed the kids corner no problem. The rest of the building was clear and so we made a left toward the vintage section. Some of the books were in glass cases and some were behind lasers.
That is probably what triggered the alarm.
So far, nothing seemed taken. I checked around the corner as Jay closer inspected the shelving. He wiped some dust off the top shelf and read a few titles. It took him a minute as he went through the titles very carefully. The police had given him a list of all the books and he checked off each one. I kept watch on all the shadows, ready to pounce.
Jay turned to me and signed 'All Clear.'
I signed back. 'Ditto.'
I saw his figure relax and he moved his shoulders back, tense from the situation. I pressed my ear piece. "Hey guys. It is all clear. Doesn't look like anyone is in here and nothing was taken. We will do one more sweep of the building but chances are he's gone."
Donut man replied to me. "Sounds good Green Ninja!" he apparently turned toward his coworker and said, "Never thought I would work along side the ninja!"
I chuckled softly and hit my piece again. "Hey... uh I think you forgot to hit your ear piece off." A shrill crackle came through my own piece and I gasped. Jay did the same. I pressed the piece again, trying to clear it. "Hello? Hello?"
Jay shook his head. "Mine isn't working either-" The blue ninja let out a grunt of pain and stumbled.
A shadowy figure stood behind the blue ninja, battle stance. "Hello."
