Chapter 19

~Caroline~

"What did you find?" Caroline asked as Damon entered the living room. He had placed a hand on her mother's shoulder, trying to support her. Her way of walking looked a little weird, but she seemed to be better already.
Liz sat down on a chair close to the couch Caroline was sitting on. They had all gathered around the wooden table in the living room, waiting for Damon to finally share what he had discovered.
Klaus had put his arm around Caroline. His behavior had gotten a little weird lately in general. She had only given him an astonished glance but she hadn’t said anything. Now that her mother was in the room, it seemed a little inopportune though.
Stefan was about to text Jeremy, who had left with Alaric to 'follow their latest lead'.
The rest of them had been impatiently waiting for Damon to expose what he knew, but he seemed to enjoy keeping the others on tenterhooks.
"How are you feeling?" Caroline wanted to know from her mother. When she noticed the confused way her mother had looked at her, she got up to remove Klaus' arm from her body. She took another chair and placed it next to her mother, squinting her eyes at Klaus while sitting down.
Her mother wasn't supposed to know.
Wait, what wasn't she supposed to know?
They weren't together, not even close, there was nothing to even know about them.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me. What's he doing here?"
Klaus opened his mouth, but Caroline gave him a warning look and started talking before he had the chance to. "We asked him for help."
"I see."
The weak smirk on her mother's face told Caroline she wasn't buying it. But luckily, her mother hadn't decided to ask any other questions.
"Come on, Damon. Tell us what you know," Stefan said, leading their conversation back to the actual topic.
"When the three of you came back from your house", he pointed at Caroline, Klaus and Liz, "you", he looked at Stefan, "texted me and told me about this bullet with the carving. That's when I remembered I had seen something like that before. Just a few weeks ago, when you decided to leave with him", he pointed at Caroline and then at Klaus, "I told you I had a dead body to bury, do you remember?"
Damn it. Now he had spilled it.
"I think so." She nodded, only waiting for her mother to say something.
And she was right, she didn’t take long to understand Damn’s complicated story.
"You went with him?" Her eyes were wide open. "Why?"
She nodded. "I know I should've told you, I just didn't want you to be worried. And I knew you would be if you knew I was spending time with him."
Ignoring the indignant look on Klaus' face, she added a little louder than needed: "But we're not together or anything!"
Damon motioned her mother to let him finish and Caroline was actually glad about the change of topic.
"And then?"
"Before that, a guy came to me at the Grill. He was asking weird questions about the town's Sheriff and Caroline and if I knew anything about 'the werewolf original'. He was annoying and confusing me, so when he asked me about Elena, I killed him. When I buried him in the woods, I didn't pay attention to it, but Stefan's description of the bullet reminded me of the necklace this weirdo was wearing. Ric and I opened the grave. And now look what we've found."
He pulled something out of his pocket and handed it to Caroline. It was a silvery necklace with a golden pendant on which the familiar cross and the rose were drawn.
"It's the same symbol."
Her mind tried to progress everything she had just heard.
Why had that guy asked him about her and her mother? This wasn't about her, was it?
She shuddered.
"How does any of this fit together? And why haven't we found anything about Bonnie and Elena yet?"
Damon shrugged. "I don't know. Let's just hope they're still alive."

~Klaus~

It was harder for her than she would ever admit.  He could see it in her eyes.
He wanted to comfort her, but doing that in front of the Salvatores was a little too cheesy for him.
He had probably been right.  It had been about her. Elena and Bonnie had been taken because of her, he knew it. They had been abducted because of her...to get to him. That's what it must have been about all the time.
Was he supposed to say something?
Probably not.
On the other hand, the more eyes were looking, the faster they could find a solution.
What was he thinking? He was smarter than them. If he couldn't find a connection between Elena and Caroline, they probably wouldn't either.
But somehow, it was a little unfair to them.
Wow, the blond vampire had probably had a positive influence on him.
If he liked that he didn't know.
She changed him, but did he want to be changed?
"They want something from me."
Suddenly, all the attention was directed to him.
"I mean, think about it, it's obvious. Damon, you said he asked you about the Sheriff, Caroline, Elena and me. Elena and Bonnie are gone and those who took them knew if Caroline found out, she would return to Mystic Falls with me. That's why they replaced her mother, they wanted to hold Caroline captive as soon as she got home so that..."
He paused. Did he want to say that out loud?
Before he could, Caroline finished his sentence for him. "So that you would come and look after me. But what do they want from you?"
"I don't know. But for my liking, they know a little too much about us all."
"They must have known about us being in Chicago, me being friends with Bonnie and Elena and... you caring for me." She said the last part of her sentence a little quieter than the rest.
Klaus nodded while the others were trying to follow their thoughts.
"So what are we going to do?"
"We still have Liz' lookalike’s phone," Damon remembered. "Maybe we can ask our Sheriff to track whoever is behind this?"
Caroline's mother nodded. "Sure."
Klaus got up, gritting his teeth. "And then we need to figure out what they want from me. If they think they can play games with me, they’re wrong."
