~Klaus~
„No, Damon, like I just said, they're not here," Klaus yelled into his phone.
"They can't have disappeared right in front of your eyes!"
"Well, actually that's exactly what happened!"
"You've got to be kidding me."
"Do I sound like I am?"
"Not really."
"Good. Now call the Sheriff and ask how far she is on tracking them." He hung up and clenched his teeth. He wanted to kill them. Really slowly.
He went to check the cemetery, the Grill and Caroline's house, but there was nobody. How many hiding spots did they have?
Suddenly, his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket. The display said it was an unknown number.
"Hello?" he said, expecting one of the witches to be there. But it wasn't one of them, it was the Sheriff.
"Any news?"
"I managed to track the last called number. The phone is located at the Grill. "
"That's impossible, I was there just a few minutes ago."
"I can only tell you what I know. The phone is moving oddly fast. A few seconds ago, it was still somewhere around the school."
The dislike Liz had for him was evident in her tone of voice. She probably didn't want Caroline to get together with someone like him.
"They're teleporting," Klaus concluded.
"Can they do that?"
"I don't know what they can or can't do. All I know is that I need to find them. Call me if they change their position again."
"Klaus, what are you doing?"
"I'm getting Caroline back."
"No," she said.
He could've just hung up, but for some reason, he didn't.
"Why not?"
"Come back first and ask Damon to come with you."
"Are you worried about me?" He grinned.
"It's Caroline I'm worried about."
He took a deep breath.
"Fine. Tell him to prepare. I'll be right there."
When Klaus opened the Salvatore front door and stepped inside, everybody had gathered around the table, carefully watching him as he entered.
He looked at Liz. "I thought it was only Damon you wanted me to go with?"
"Yeah, you thought so," she replied. "And I'm sorry, but I'm not going to put my daughter's life into the hands of a serial killer."
He shrugged. "I've been called worse."
Liz only gave him a smirk.
Ten minutes later, they had concocted an ingenious plan and Klaus was standing in front of the Grill. Dusk was approaching and dark clouds were beginning to cover the sky. After looking around, he kicked in the door and entered the Grill, but there was nobody inside.
Damn it. This had been an important part of the plan. The fact that they weren't here of course made the plan's execution a little harder.
He took out his phone and called the Sheriff, explaining to her how unexpectedly empty the Grill was.
"Wait a second, I'll track your phone," the Sheriff said, putting the phone away until he heard it being picked up a minute later. "My computer says the phone is on the other side of the room. Go straight forward. Maybe they left it there."
He did as she said and made a few steps.
"Okay, stop. It should be on the left."
He searched the floor and the tables, but didn't find anything. "There's nothing."
"It has to be there."
"But it's not!" he said angrily. "Give me Matt's number."
"What do you need it for?"
"Just give it to me," he demanded and hung up after the Sheriff had promised to send him his number. He now called Matt, who was at the moment standing outside and waiting.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
"No. They're not here."
"What do you mean, they're not here?"
"Listen to me closely, Matt. Is there a way to get under the Grill?"
"Not that I know of. Why? What is it?"
"There's no phone where the Sheriff says it was. I doubt they're flying, so they have to be somewhere under the earth."
"The network of tunnels? They might be there! There are parts vampires can't set foot in, it would be the perfect hiding spot!"
"Inform the others. We'll meet at the entrance to the cave close to the Lockwood cellar."
He hung up and disappeared in a second.
Klaus was the first one to arrive at the Lockwood cellar only a few minutes later, but the others didn't take much longer.
"Does anyone have the map of the tunnels?"
"You could've said you needed it," Damon snorted.
"I'm sorry, I thought you were smarter."
Klaus grabbed a few branches and lit them on fire with a lighter he had carried in his pocket. "Let's go. We can't lose any more time. I'm sure they're down there," he said, handing a branch to everyone.
Then, Klaus, Damon and Stefan slowly walked inside the dark network of tunnels.
"Wait, where are Jeremy, Alaric and Matt?"
"They're human, they're too slow. We can't wait for them," Klaus replied.
"You're right, they're human." Damon stopped. "We need them. They can get inside those places we can't enter."
Klaus swung around. Damn it. He hated it when Damon was right.
"I'll go and get them," Stefan said. Damon opened his mouth to say something, but he was already gone.
"Let's keep moving."
"Do you even have any idea where you're going?" Damon asked suspiciously as they were walking around.
"No. But walking is better than standing still."
Suddenly, Klaus came to an abrupt stop.
"What is it?" Damon wanted to know.
"Don't you hear that?"
"Hear what?"
"There is somebody," he whispered.
Damon listened for a second. "You're right. That sounds like Stefan."
"That is Stefan, he is on his way. But that's not what I mean. We're close. Come on."
Using the self-made torch, Klaus lightened the tunnels, following the noise he had heard. He was sure it had been somebody speaking.
Slowly and quietly, he aimlessly wandered around, looking for the source of the noise. Every now and then, he had to stop so that Damon could catch up with him.
"Are you sure you've heard something?" Damon murmured after a few minutes.
"I am," Klaus whispered. "Can't you hear them?"
"No."
Klaus blankly shook his head and kept walking.
"You know, I never thought I'd ever be wandering these tunnels with you without trying to kill you," Damon said.
In the darkness, Klaus could barely recognize Damon's facial features, but still, he could see he was grinning.
"Was that a compliment?"
"Kind of. I guess Blondie's had a good influence on you."
Klaus stopped. Damon crashed into him. Klaus gave him an annoyed look and pointed into the distance. "There," he mouthed.
Damon frowned when he saw the light coming from the other end of the tunnel and motioned Klaus to keep moving.
Carefully walking closer, Klaus and Damon exchanged glances and at the same time, they jumped around the corner.
What he saw made Klaus' mouth drop open.
Bonnie and Elena were shackled and lying on the floor in a corner of the cave. Bonnie was either asleep or dead, Elena looked like she was halfway dried out, her veins visible on every part of her body, her eyes partially opened.
But for him, what was worst was the sight of Caroline. She was hanging on the wall, ropes tied around her wrists. Her wrists were bleeding; the ropes were probably soaked in vervain.
She looked miserable. Her eyes were closed, she looked like she was unconscious and she was as pale as a vampire could be.
There was nobody else here. Without hesitation, he rushed into the room lit-up with candles. But then, he crashed into an invisible wall preventing him from getting inside.
Damn it.
Of course there was a spell.
He furiously stamped his foot and yelled inside the cave. Damon just stood beside him, gazing at Elena.
Something moved on the other side of the room. The dark-haired woman in her mid-thirties stepped out of the shadows.
"Oh, you're here. Finally." She grinned. „Come inside!"
She paused. „Oh right, you can't."
„What do you want?" Damon and Klaus said in unison.
"Isn't it obvious?"
All of a sudden, the cave started shaking like it was going to collapse. Stone crumbled from the ceiling and the witch confusedly looked up, her hands held in front of her face to protect herself from the heavy rocks falling down on her.--Author's Note--
