~Klaus~

Klaus got up from the couch. “Are you coming?”
Caroline looked at him. “Why? Where are we going?”
“We need to find out who is behind this, don’t you think? The sooner we start, the sooner your friends will be back.”
He looked at Damon, who was talking to Alaric on the phone, slowly explaining Klaus’ thoughts to him and Jeremy. Apparently, they had trouble understanding, otherwise Damon wouldn’t be about to repeat the story for the third time now.
Caroline exchanged glances with her mother, who nodded to show her it was okay to leave her here.
“Okay,” she said and jumped up from the couch. “Let’s go.”
Damon speechlessly raised one hand to say goodbye and wish them good luck while the two of them were just about to close the front door behind them.
Finally, when he was sure nobody would be able to hear them anymore, he could ask the question he had been wanting to ask.
“Are you okay?”
“Sure,” she replied as optimistically as possible. He stopped, turned around to face her and looked her directly into the eyes, placing his hands on her shoulders.
“We are going to bring them back. It’s not your fault, you know that.”
Her jaw clenched and she lifted her eyes from the ground she had been staring to, looking him in the eyes. She opened her lips and needed a few seconds for the words to come out. “It is my fault. It’s because I decided to go with you that they must’ve figured out we were … close.”
“You were on the ground, Caroline,” his voice was nothing more than a whisper. “And you made the right decision.”
“I know it was the right decision.” Her head was nodding slightly. She paused. “When I think about it, I don’t regret it. I enjoyed Chicago, every second of it.”
He felt the joy rising inside him. “I’m glad you’re finally admitting it.”
Her eyes turned back to the ground. “Do you think they’re still alive?”

“I don’t know. But if they had killed them, they would be extremely stupid. A good killer will never kill their hostages before the victims have demanded proof to see the hostages are still alive. Trust me, I know. And if you look at the way this thing must’ve been planned, I don’t think this is their first time doing something like that.”
She nodded.
Apparently, he had been able to convince her.
“Come on,” he said, taking her hand. “We’ll figure it out. We just need to keep going.”
“Okay.”
Her hand felt good in his as they were walking down the street in a fast pace. He didn’t really know where they were going though. He had only wanted to talk to her outside. But he knew he had to pretend he had a plan because she thought he did.
The city was devoid of people in a weird and unusual way.
Maybe everybody had stayed inside to give them some alone time?
Well, maybe they just didn’t want to come outside because it had started to drizzle. A gust of wind hit his face and he noticed it had gotten cold, as in supernaturally cold.
He looked around, but couldn’t see anybody or anything out of the ordinary.
Actually, he had already thought about asking her to take a plane and fly somewhere else, where those bastards weren’t going to find her. He had to admit that deep down, he was worried. After all, he didn’t know what they wanted from him and what they were willing to do to get it. If it included harming her, they were as good as dead.
And apart from that, she was probably safest with him.
A wind got up and he staggered. It was much too strong for a normal storm, and besides, it came out of nowhere. Caroline unexpectedly pulled on his hand, but he was busy finding the wind’s source.
“Klaus?” she asked, fear evident in her tone. He swung around to see why.
When he saw her, he frowned and his eyes widened.
How the…?
Caroline’s feet were not touching the ground; it was like an invisible force was pulling her up – and away from him.
He didn’t let go of her and threw a glance over his shoulder, but not only was there nobody who seemed to be casting a spell, there was nobody at all.
He used his strength to pull her down to the ground, like a kite in a thunderstorm.
Suddenly, she fell on her knees and the wind disappeared, but the rain had gotten a little stronger.
He offered her his hand and pulled her to her feet. While she was wiping the dirt off her jeans, he said: “Stay by my side.”
“What was that?”
“A witch, I guess. I don’t know why, but they’re trying to get you away from me. Let’s find those bitches.” He cleared his throat. “Witches.”
She chuckled, which made him grin.
Still holding her hand to make sure, she wasn’t going to be stolen from him, he murmured: “They can’t be far.”
Something rustled behind him and he swung around, directly looking at a woman’s face. He smirked, trying to hide his surprise. She had dark brown, almost black curly hair and dark skin. She looked like she was in her mid thirties.
“We’re closer than you think.” She grinned back. The lack of respect in her appearance made him grit his teeth. Who did she think she was?
He stepped in front of Caroline to make sure the witch didn’t have a chance to get to her without having to pass him first.
We. Okay, I see.” He grinned. “You’re a witch. And you’re not alone. So if I turn around now, there will be at least three more of you, am I right?”
“Almost.” Her eyes were glowing.
He turned around and noticed there were two other persons who had appeared out of nowhere. Another woman, younger than the first one, and a man at the same age. They were definitely related. He couldn’t only tell because of the similar faces, they also had the same devilish grin plastered on their faces. Still, it was nothing compared to his own.
He pressed Caroline’s hand to make sure she was still behind him. He couldn’t watch all three of them at a time, which made him a little nervous.
Out of the corner of his eyes, he could see something else appear out of nowhere. A fourth person…
Bonnie?
Caroline yelled her name before she let go of his hand and ran to her.
Oh no.
He knew what was going to happen.
Before he could do anything about it, Caroline disappeared into thin air with the others. Klaus looked around, but they were all gone.
He hadn’t noticed the puddle which had formed under his feet and he stamped his foot on the wet street, water splashing everywhere.
He scratched his back, ignoring the fact that he was dripping and completely sodden.
He really did have a problem now.
