Caroline opened her eyes just to squint at the glary light blinding her eyes.
She covered her face with the back of her hand and carefully opened one eye after the other, trying to get used to the sudden brightness.
It took her a few seconds to recognize the room she was in and another few seconds to remember she had actually fallen asleep on the couch.
How had she gotten to bed? Had she woken up during the night?
No. At least she didn’t think so.
She turned her head to see if Klaus was there, but the other half of the bed was empty. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she placed her feet on the cold floor and got up.
“Klaus?” she yelled, walking towards the kitchen. “Hello?”
Because she didn’t get an answer, she looked out the window to see if his car was still parked in front of the hotel, and it was.
But where was he?
Klaus’ disappearance wasn’t her only problem – she was also hungry as hell. She opened the fridge to see if Klaus had brought any blood bags, but it was completely empty.
Great.
For some reason, she didn’t want to go out and get herself something to eat without him, so she figured she was just going to have to wait for him to return.
She opened the balcony door and stepped outside, looking down at the streets of Chicago. It was a cloudy day and looking at the grey sky, she assumed it was going to rain sooner or later today. A fresh October breeze touched her cheeks and lifted her blond hair.
The silence got her thinking.
She wondered what the others were doing back in Mystic Falls. Had they found any more vampires in the woods? How were they dealing with Tyler’s death? Were they okay?
It had only been a few days since she had left Mystic Falls with Klaus; today was the third day to be exact. Still, it was like she had been away for much longer.
,Probably because I’ve never really been anywhere except for Mystic Falls,’ she thought and let her gaze travel over the brisk streets of Chicago. The moment the word “Mystic Falls” left her lips, a picture of Tyler appeared in her head. She leaned against the metal railing and took a deep breath. Maybe it was weird, but she noticed it didn’t hurt as much as it did a few days ago.
Yes, she did miss him. She missed him so much.
But still, it felt like the hole in her heart was slowly starting to heel. Even if she wouldn’t have admitted it, the thought that Klaus had a big part in it had already crossed her mind.
And although he drove her crazy, she was grateful for that.
Wait, what?
She shook her head.
She wasn’t supposed to think that way. It wasn’t fair. Tyler deserved her to grief for a longer time than just a few days. She felt like she owed him that. She loved him; she wasn’t going to forget him so fast. She wasn’t supposed to.
She swung around and stepped back inside. As she wanted to sit down on the couch, she spotted a box on the table. Wondering what was in it and who it was for, she took a step closer and read the notification that was attached to it: For Caroline.
A smile played on her lips as she carefully opened the red bow that held the package together and looked inside. The first thing she saw was a sheet of paper with something written on it in a really pretty handwriting.
,To the most beautiful vampire I’ve ever met. Thank you for giving me another chance. Klaus.’
Her smile widened as she turned the paper around and found an amazing black-and-white pencil drawing of herself in the middle of a city, she suspected Chicago.
She shifted her gaze back to the box and saw a beautiful light blue and silver necklace on top of a cream-colored piece of clothing, a dress she assumed. She took the necklace and scrutinized it, her eyes sparkling with joy. Slowly brushing over the fabric, she lifted the dress up in the air and looked at it. It was really pretty.
“Do you like it?”
Caroline winced. She hadn’t heard Klaus coming.
“It’s beautiful,” she confirmed, smiling at him. “Thank you.”
“Not as beautiful as you,” he smirked, which made her chuckle.
“You should wear it,” he suggested.
She nodded and waited for him to leave the room. When he made no move to do so, she pointed to the door. “Get out! I’m not getting undressed in front of you.”
Rolling his eyes in fake annoyance and letting go of a melodramatic sigh, he finally did as she said. When she had taken off her clothes, she slipped into her new dress. Wondering how Klaus had perfectly figured out her size, she pulled the strapless garment over her bra.
“May I come in now?”
“Yes.”
He opened the door and leaned against the doorframe with a smile on his face.
And those dimples…
“I can’t reach the zipper. Would you mind closing it?”
He came closer and she noticed him take in a deep breath of air. Her heartbeat quickened and she closed her eyes as he slowly zippered her dress on the back.
She turned around to face him. Her gaze wandered down to his hands, in which he was holding her necklace. Her smile broadened even more.
She turned her head to look at the faint reflection of herself in the window. Lifting her hair up with one hand, she basically invited him to put the necklace around her neck. After he had managed to close it, she stood still for a few seconds, trying to control her too fast breath. She then looked at him, smiling and pulling him in for a hug.
“Thank you,” she whispered in his ear.
“You’re welcome,” he replied at normal volume.
“You’re welcome, too.”
He took a step back and held her at arm’s length, confusedly frowning at her. “What?”
“The chance I’m giving you. You’re welcome,” she explained, smiling.
And even if his mouth wasn’t visibly smiling, his eyes still couldn’t hide it.
He stepped closer and his gaze wandered downwards, upwards and finally settled on her eyes.
“You look stunning,” he muttered.
Caroline’s heart skipped a beat. She let out her breath audibly, glanced at his lips and when she looked up again, their eyes met. He leaned in, pulled her closer and pressed his lips on hers.
And she didn’t prevent him from doing so.
