"Honestly, you shouldn't have killed him," Caroline said as they were sitting in a fast food restaurant. "Now we can't find out what he knew and, what's even more important, how he knew it."
She took a bite from her cheeseburger. "But still. Thanks for saving me," she munched.
Klaus put down his drink. "Maybe he was just a guy who somehow knew what you are. It doesn't have to mean anything."
"Speaking of vampire problems, I wonder if they found any other vampires back in Mystic Falls," Caroline mumbled. "I should probably call them. I totally forgot about them!"
"I'm sure they're okay," Klaus reassured her, finishing his burger.
She took out her phone and checked if she had any new messages - and she did: A text from Elena and another one from Stefan.
She opened Elena's message first:
"Please call me as soon as you get this!"
Caroline frowned.
"What is it?" Klaus asked curiously.
She held her phone in front of his face so that he could read it.
"Maybe she's just asking you for relationship advice or something." He took a sip from his drink.
Caroline opened Stefan's message and showed it to Klaus.
"I don't think so."
"We have a problem," he read the text message out loud. He raised an eyebrow.
"I'll call them," she said and dialed Elena's number. Someone picked up after the second bleep.
"Hello, Elena's phone?"
"Hey Stefan, this is Caroline. Why do you have Elena's phone? And what was your text about, is everyone okay?”She wrinkled her forehead, warily glancing at Klaus.
"Most of us are." He took a deep breath. "Look, Caroline, I don't really have a lot of time right now. Call me later, okay?"
"No! Stefan, wait!" she shouted into her phone, which made a group of teenage girls on the nearby table turn to her. "What's wrong, Stefan? I need to believe you're going to fill me in on everything, especially when I'm not at home."
She gave Klaus a dirty look, who was listening in. He shrugged innocently.
"Okay." Stefan hesitated. "I'm in the woods, looking for Elena. Somebody took her and Bonnie's gone too."
"Wait, what?" Caroline exclaimed.
"They were heading towards the Mystic Grill with Damon when somebody snapped Damon's neck. When he woke up, they were gone. He called us and now..." He inhaled. "Well, Damon and Alaric are searching for them and Matt and Jeremy are with me."
"Oh my God!" She paused. "I should be home searching with you guys right now. Please call me if you find anything? Maybe there's a way for me to help."
"I will. I have to go now. Talk to you soon."
"Bye," she said and put her phone back on the table.
"Did you hear that?"
"Yeah. Somehow everybody wants to abduct Elena."
"You took her too, remember?"
"Oh yeah, I remember. But you should be happy! If it wasn’t for her, you wouldn't have met me." He chuckled.
"You're not funny," she whined. "What am I supposed to do now? I can't just sit here and do nothing about my best friends being kidnapped by ... well, whoever it was."
"I'm sure they can take care of themselves. Besides, our hero Stefan is on his way," he grinned.
-----
Caroline put her hand on top of Klaus's. "Thank you for doing this."
"...I hope all of you have had an enjoyable flight and I wish you a good evening," the pilot spoke in the background.
"You get even worse when you're worried", he said, which made Caroline grin. “I didn’t really have a choice.”
"I know," she commented and satisfyingly leaned back in her first class seat.
Biting her lip, she turned to Klaus, who was looking out of the plane's window.
"Do you think they're okay? I mean, we've all been kidnapped before, but they've been gone for over 10 days now."
"I don't know, I may be a vampire but I'm not a clairvoyant. I'm sure we'll find them, though."
Caroline took a deep breath.
What if they were hurt? Or worse? She didn't want to lose anybody else. And she didn’t think she could take any more without flipping the switch.
The last days had been hard but fun. Stefan had called every now and then to keep her up to date. Even if Caroline had been worried about her friends, she had still spent a few awesome days with Klaus. They had visited a magnificent Art Museum and Klaus had showed her where one of his painting was exhibited.
He knew so much about art, it was crazy! He had also given her some tips on how to improve her drawing, which she really needed.
Because Caroline hadn’t been able to calm down, they had looked for a witch in Chicago the day before yesterday, and thanks to Klaus' connections, they had actually found one.
After he had, of course, threatened her, she had tried a locator spell to find Elena and Bonnie. She had said she couldn't find them, but she assured them they were still alive and just protected from a cloaking spell to hide them, which meant there was at least one witch with them.
The plane shook when it landed on the ground. A few minutes later, everyone grabbed their luggage and headed towards the exit.
After they had finally gotten out of the airport, they took a taxi and arrived at the Salvatore house two hours later.
Klaus kicked the door open and waited for Caroline to enter. "Ladies first," he grinned.
"Hello?" she yelled, searching the house. "Is anybody home?"
A second later, a familiar gust of wind passed her and Stefan appeared in front of her.
"Caroline, what are you doing here?" He asked, happily pulling her in for a hug.
"Intermediate stop to help you search for your damsels in distress. And get away from my girlfriend," Klaus spoke with a weird grin on his face.
"Girlfriend?" Stefan raised an eyebrow. "What have I missed?"
"Nothing, just ignore him. I'm not his girlfriend."
He nodded amusedly, watching Caroline throw a warning glance at Klaus.
Klaus clapped his hands. "So, where are we on saving our lovelies? I don't have all day."
