"Elena! How are you doing? Been a long time huh?"
"A long time? Alex, are you kidding me right now?"I say, raising my voice.
He scratches his head and looks at me, confused. Realising that I may have overreacted, I calm myself down and then I speak again.
"You moved out without saying a word to me, leaving me all alone -"I stop speaking and quickly dry my tears before he sees it. The conversation turned awkward as nobody said anything, then all of a sudden, he smiles and says congratulations to me.
Frowning, I say"Excuse me".I know this guy did not just say that.
"You got the job, Elena."He walks off towards the stairs. Huh, that was weird. I shake the thought away and I press the button and the elevator opens, and I enter inside. I leave the building, purposefully, ignoring the hateful glances by the woman at reception. I walk to my car and set off to my Aunt's house to pick Alessia off. I park by the side and walk to the front door and knock. The door opens and my Aunt reaches out and hugs me, in return, I do so too. I might sound dramatic but I've not seen her since like....3 weeks ago, that goes to show that she and I became quite close since my mom passed away.
"I've missed you so much. How are you doing?"She asks whilst I let myself into the house.
"I'm doing just fine."
"So what happened to Uncle Desmond, I've not seen him since Alessia 9th birthday party?"I look around and find Alessia watching the TV in the living room.
"Well, Desmond and I divorced last year."She saw my reaction and explained it in more detail. She went to the kitchen and sips her cup of tea and began to speak.
"You know, at first I thought the marriage was going well and nothing was going to change it. But, it all fell down when he started to go out frequently and come home late."She takes a few sips of the drink before continuing.
"And I remember one particular day,I came home to find him in our bed with another woman, we had a very long discussion and he promised that he wouldn't do it again and I gave him another chance."This time, she drinks the tea until the last drop and continues talking.
"I decided it was the last straw when my friend called to me say that whilst she was at work, she saw Desmond being intimate with a woman, I was hesitant to believe this but she showed me proof through pictures and CCTV. That evening, we argued about what happened and then we came to the conclusion that this marriage wasn't working and in the end, we divorced".After she finished talking, I was at loss for words because this was unexpected.
"I'm sorry to hear that, Auntie."I hug her, patting her back.
"It's okay. I've moved on from it."She assures me, we break the contact and I go on to sit on the couch next to Alessia.
"Mummy!"She exclaims with her face full of excitement.
"Hi, Lissy. Did you have fun today?"She nods and proceeds to talk.
"Yes, I did. I went to school, played with my friends, learnt new things and Aunty picked me up from school. Oh, I also went to the park and I found it cool!"
"I'm glad that you enjoyed yourself today, now come and let's say goodbye to Aunt Aaliyah."I take her hand gently and guide her to the front door.
"Bye-bye, Aunty."Alissa waves at her and she does the same. She opens the door for us, we step outside and we both wave at her again, before going to the car and drive off.
As I'm driving, I let my mind replay what happened: the interview, seeing Alex or my Aunt telling me about Uncle Desmond.
What a strange day it has been.
