"My name is Ms. Sommers. And I'll be teaching you all 5th grade English this school year. I'm just going to run down some of my class rules. Is that alright with y'all?" I asked my new students.
"Yes!" They all said in a mixed unison.
I decided to resign at the high school I was teaching at last school year and transferred to a Junior High school that teaches grades fifth through seventh. Not that I disliked teaching 12th grade English, I just desired a change. Salina is the modern dance teacher here, so I felt more than comfortable teaching here. I wouldn't pass up on the opportunity of working with my best friend.
"Okay great!" I started. "First things first, I do not tolerate disrespect. I'm easy going majority of the time, and I love to have fun with my students. I like to make learning fun, you know? But the moment any one gets out of line, you will see a side of Ms. Sommers you might not like. It will be reasonable but I can't guarantee it'll be nice. Does that sound fair."
"Yes Ms. Sommers."
They were adorable nonetheless.
"So.." I trailed off tapping my chin as I pondered. "Im going to give you all the opportunity to ask me questions about myself. Introduce yourselves to me, then ask me whatever you like. Nothing too personal though, like where I live. I don't want you guys knocking on my door if I issue a bad grade." The class laughed as I, myself, chuckled.
"So, who wants to go first?" I got up from around my desk and circled around my desk making my way to the front so I can get a better view if my students. I gently pushed my things on my desk to the side and hopped on, sitting directly in the middle. It's a good thing I wore pants today.
"How about you over there, in the blue shirt?" I pointed to the young man closest to the classroom door.
"Hi Ms. Sommers, my name is Ja'mani Brown." He stood up to introduce himself to myself and the classroom.
"Hello Ja'mani. Such a unique name, I love it." He blushed as I complimented his name.
"Thank you." He replied. "But my question to you is, how long have you been teaching?"
"Good question Ja'mani. This will be my third school year of teaching. I taught high school before you guys."
I answered a few more questions, allowing my students to get to know me. I want my students to trust me as a person in order to properly educate them. Apart from my degree in education, I was a psychology minor in undergrad. So, I often would apply those ideas into my style of teaching.
I completely enjoyed my day getting to know my students. This day was a bit of an orientation. I didn't refer to any curriculum, being that it was only the first day. I'm probably going to wait until the next week to issue out homework. Theres always changes in my roster during the first week or two of every school year.
Once the last bell of the day sounded off, the children spewed out of my class like roaches do when you turn in the lights. Sal and I decided to go out to dinner together to celebrate our first day back to work after summer vacation, and me coming on board to this new school. I was sitting in my classroom waiting on Salina, then we were gonna head out together.
I looked at my buzzing phone on my desk and smiled once I saw August's name and face pop up on my screen.
"Hey stinky." I teased.
