"I'm really sorry about the other day. Something came up."
"I guess it's cool, but you gon' have to make it up." Brian gave a boyish, yet sly, grin.
I chuckled, genuinely sorry for standing him up. I called him a few days after the incident with August and I because Brian had done nothing wrong. I owe him this lunch outing that we're currently on. We're at a simple diner, having lunch casually as two individuals.
Brian has been nothing but nice to me, and I'm the one who slipped up. I even slipped up again this morning, with August... We've actually been slipping up for a few days now.
I hate the way things are turning out and I blame no one but myself. I can't handle the emotional frustration along with being with August, but my body craves for him. It's like we were made for each other, but not meant to be... If that even makes sense.
I do ultimately see myself with nobody other than August, but we aren't in that place yet. But Brian? He's just a friend. I don't plan on taking things any further than where it is at the moment. He's just someone to talk to and keep my mind afloat with positivity.
"Hey, earth to Kourtney." Brian waved his hands in my face, snapping me back into the current.
"Sorry, my mind took me some other place." I picked up a French-fry and ate it.
"I see. Wanna talk about it?"
"Umm, not exactly. It's just too complicated."
He nodded his head as he sipped his soda. "No problem ma. But when you ready, I'm always here ta' listen."
I smiled. "Thanks."
After a few moments of silent eating, Brian spoke.
"So Kourtney, tell me something about yourself that I don't already know."
I cleared my throat before speaking. "Well, when we met over a year ago in California, I wasn't a mother then."
"So you have a child now? How old is he or she?"
"Yea, I have a 4 and a half month old daughter... Kamryn." I said while smiling. Her name alone brings a smile to my face.
"Oh she's pretty new. And you said your single right?"
"Long story for a different day. I just got out of a serious relationship."
"With her father, or..?"
"Um, yea with her father." I replied in a duh tone with much attitude. I was unsure of what he was trying to imply.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything by it. I was just asking, not trying to assume or judge." He responded remorsefully.
My face softened. "It's fine. I was with her dad when you and I met back in California. We broke up 4 months ago though."
"Damn, I'm sorry Ma."
