— ❝SINCE YOU THINK I DON'T LOVE YOU I JUST THOUGHT YOU WERE CUTE THAT'S WHY I KISSED YOU❞
At some point during her sobbing, Finn had directed her towards the bed. Wrapped up in his arms, her clutch against his shirt never grew limp as he stepped back along with her until his legs bumped against the mattress.
The chorus of muffled cries that shook her body never failed to break him apart further and further. Every few minutes, she would breathe out, "I'm sorry." And if he thought it were impossible to hurt any more than he already did, those words only proved him wrong, stinging each time they escaped her barely parted lips.
By the time the tears had stopped falling, stained along her rosy cheeks, the shaking of her shoulders ceased, that was when he knew she had drifted off into sleep.
Her head was nestled against his chest, hands finally limp against the fabric of his now wrinkled shirt. Soft breaths exhaled so quietly, caressing his neck, sending shivers springing along his spine.
He held onto her for a moment, lingering as long as possible. His hands cradled her gently as he carefully adjusted her to lay along the mattress. She fell delicately, limply against the soft cushioning beneath them, head lolled along the pillow. He tugged along the blanket, bringing it up to her shoulders. Stray strands of hair swept across her face, so he gingerly brushed them aside with the tips of his fingers before he sat back.
Sleep was meant to offer some peace of mind, a time when your body and mind were finally able to rest. Yet as he looked towards her right then, all he saw etched upon every inch of her face as she slept was the remnants of the pain she had worn so clearly from the moment she had uttered the truth.
"It was a mistake."
Those words, like a cold, sharp knife plunged into his chest. They rang out, echoing torturously in the wide chambers of his mind, chipping away at a piece of him each time they resurfaced.
Why was he feeling so torn apart with this? All he ever wanted from her was friendship. A kiss that meant nothing, that was only a mistake, it should have been the first conclusion he came to.
Because she was right. Her emotions were scattered along everywhere since her dad died. Finn had seen it right before him, so how could he have not seen this coming? All she did was act on impulse, and he gave in to her at that moment.
The hurt he succumbed to was overwhelming. Up until then, he thought it was because he hated to see Millie in such pain. But as he sat there in the quiet that followed, staring up at the ceiling as he leaned his head back against the headboard, he began to wonder if there was something more to what he felt.
