CHAPTER EIGHTEEN.

❝ BUT YOU GOTTA PLAY THE CROWD
RIGHT, AND THEY LOVE IT WHEN YOU
CALL ME BABY BOY ❞Sitting through that dinner had felt like her own personal hell for hours. She was surprised that her mother believed she was really so supportive and approving of this abrupt engagement.
Luckily for her, Kelly didn't seem to find anything alarming when she had stepped out for some air. Actually, she seemed far too busy to notice anything else around her. Because even when she had returned, there wasn't a single comment directed towards her as she and Finn took their seats again, hand in hand.
But she sat there silently with the comfort that Finn would remain beside her for as long as she needed. It was a perk of its own, reminding her of the reason why she was even here in the first place dealing with all of this.
Within days, Millie was packed up for the trip she had been promised. It was refreshing, and there was a light skip in her step that she hadn't felt in a while around home. The only downside to it all, while she was busying herself and getting ready to leave, her mother was busy getting things ready for the new additions to their small family.
Everything felt way too fast for her. She had been fine living in their day to day life, no one else around. While it was lonely, she didn't exactly hate it. Millie had been free to do what she wanted without worrying about the peering eyes of others beside the help.
Now she was being told she had a suddenly new sister? A new man to take the place of her father?
All she could hope was that he was away as much as her own mother was.
She crept along the final stair steps, her hand gripping the railing as she caught sight of Kelly standing in the middle of the living room, a housekeeper beside her scribbling with a pen in a notepad.
Millie quickly realized she was on her usual rounds of taking a look over things in the house. Just another preparation for the two that would soon be joining them.
In those days, she had tried her best to steer clear of her mother. Besides a few bits of small talk, they hadn't really spoken. The only reason she was even down here to begin with was because she was expecting Finn at any moment.
Ducking her head down, she tried to slip by discreetly. But from the corner of her eye, Kelly caught a glimpse of her passing through.
"Oh, Millie!"
She shut her eyes tightly, inhaling sharply, freezing up. It took all her strength to face her mother with a smile that almost reached her eyes.
