— ❝ I WANT YOU HERE SO I'M ALRIGHT ❞
"Let's run away."
The words fell so easily out of his mouth that it actually startled him to hear his own voice. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he could have sworn that this is usually her line, no?
"Stealing my lines?" she remarked coyly, nudging her shoulder against his arm.
It was like she read his mind.
With a smile, he teased, "I can borrow it, right?"
"I'd rather you didn't."
He snorted, biting back a sarcastic remark.
It's not like he didn't understand why. It was her way of saying I want you to feel happier than that. Of course he understood, because he felt the same way when it came to her saying similar things.
A comfortable silence washed over them as a million things ran through Millie's mind. She wondered why he was so irritated earlier with Joshua, or what is his relationship with Olivia, if there was one. Oh, God, she really hoped there was barely anything there. But she wondered if Olivia knew his problems the way she did. Was Finn confiding in her the same way? Did she understand his fears, his wishes?
Why couldn't she just voice these questions out loud? Where was the line drawn? Were any of her curiosities too personal to ask about?
It was tough for her to flow through life completely sober, especially since it had been so long since the last time she wasn't under the influence of anything. What if she overstepped? Man, she was so overthinking this, but she couldn't stop the anxiety that pressed at the forefront of her mind. The constant hum of anxiety was usually dulled by her intoxication.
Millie had hated these parties from the very beginning because she always felt so nervous, so out of place. Like, no matter what she did or said, she simply didn't belong here the way everyone else does. Everyone else just floated through life, and they didn't seem to second guess themselves or anything.
It was that lonesome feeling that had urged her to try those happy drugs in the first place. Once she had something buzzing in her bloodstream, she felt like she could belong amongst the crowd. She could take charge and convince others to follow her lead because there was no fear or worries plaguing her mind.
The rich princess that had everything handed to her on a silver platter by her wealthy parents knew what she wanted and she knew how to take the lead. Her aura shone so brightly that no one bothered to look beneath the surface. No one ever understood how lonely she felt in a crowded room. Until she met her darling, Finn.
