NEWT POV

"Why on earth should we help you?" I spit.

"Because," He says. "If you don't, we'll kill you."

"There's always a catch." I say to Thomas, who laughs.

"What do you want help with anyway?" Thomas says, chuckling slightly.

"That's confidential." He says. "You'll come back with us or die. Your choice."

I look at Thomas. He nods.

"Fine." I say. "I guess we don't have a choice."

The man nods. "Glad you see that."

He leads us to a small jet. I have no idea where he got it, but we get on.

"Who are you anyway?" Aris asks.

"You can call me Dr. Goodman." He says. I can't help but find his name ironic.

We sit down. As the plane takes off, I look out the window. The Scorch zooms past. We're never going to be able to get back to IMAT.

"Newt, are you alright?" Thomas asks.

I shake my head. "Doesn't matter."

"It matters." He says. "Just because we're in the middle of a huge disaster doesn't mean it doesn't matter."

"But it just doesn't." I say. "This isn't about me."

He puts a hand on my cheek and drags his thumb across it.

"If you say so." He says.

I lean over and kiss him.

"Listen," He says. "We'll escape this, somehow. I promise."

"Maybe we should just accept it." I say, putting my hands in my lap.

He grabs my hand, lacing our fingers together. "We don't just give up, Newt."

"But maybe we should." I say. "As long as we don't die, maybe it'll all be okay."

"You don't really believe that, do you?" He asks.

"It's just...everyday is a struggle. Maybe it doesn't have to be."

"Newt..." He sighs. "We can't just give up."

"No, Thomas, we can. You just want to be a hero." I say. I stand. "Just...leave me alone." I walk away.

THOMAS POV

I watch him walk away, my heart breaking slightly. I don't know what I did. But I can't just give up, right? I lean back, listening to the roar of the jet engines. I can't tell whether I really should leave him alone or go after him. I groan.

"Thomas." Aris hisses from the other lane.

"What?" I ask, taking my head out of my hands.

"What's wrong with Newt?" he asks. "Is he okay?"

I shake my head. "Don't ask me."

Aris gives me a look but leans back to his own seat. I sigh. I should probably go see if he's okay.

I get up and walk down the aisle. I realize I have no idea where he went. There's not many places he could have gone in a small jet, though. I open one of the bathroom doors and see him sitting against one of the walls.

"I told you to leave me alone, Tommy." He says.

"You know I never listen to that." I say, walking in and shutting the door.

"Yeah." He says.

"Listen, Newt, we can't just give up, okay?" I say.

"Go ahead. Go on without me." He says. "If it's what you want."

"Of course that's not what I want!" I say. "I just don't want to give up."

"There's nothing we can do anymore, Tommy." He says. "And don't say that we always come up with something, because every single one of our plans end with someone dead. Maybe if we do nothing, we can all live."

"But it's not really living." I say.

"It doesn't matter!" He cries. "It doesn't matter! None of it matters anymore! Don't you get it? We're all going to die! It doesn't matter what we do! We're going to die!"

"But-" I start.

"No." He says. "We're going to die. And you know what? I remembered something. When I walked away, I came in here and I remembered something."

"What did you remember?" I ask quietly.

"I remembered us." he says. "When we were kids, we were best friends. WICKED took us from our parents and they gave us little trials. I know you know that part. When we were young, we snuck out at night with Minho and Alby and Teresa and Chuck. We're the only ones left, Thomas." He says. "And it's all my fault."

"Newt, it's not your fault." I say.

"Yes, Thomas, it is." He says. "I got Minho killed. I couldn't save Alby. I couldn't save Teresa. And it's my fault Chuck is dead. I can't lose you. I can't be the only one left. So no more of these stupid plans that only save most of us. No more escaping. Unless we're going to die, please, no more."

I don't respond. I just pull him close to me and kiss him. He kisses me back.

"Tommy, I'm sorry." He whispers. "But I just can't do it."

"It's okay." I say. "I'll do it all."

He wraps his arms around my neck. "I don't want to think anymore."

"Neither do I." I say.

He kisses me and I pull him closer.

Soon, we land and are roughly escorted off of the jet. Dr. Goodman leads us into a massive building that looks like it used to be an office building. He leads us to a room that is completely empty.

"Wait here." he says and leaves.

"What are we supposed to do?" I ask.

Newt shrugs. "Dunno."

"I guess we just wait." Aris says, sitting against a wall.

"Guess so." I say, sitting down.

Newt sits next to me, resting his head on my shoulder.

"What do you think he wants us to do?" He asks.

"No clue." I say. "I hope it doesn't kill us."

Newt laughs dryly. "Yeah."

We wait for at least an hour before he comes back.

"Alright children." He says.

"We're not children." Newt says.

Dr. Goodman looks taken aback. "Well, you still have to come with me. It's time for a quick test."

"What is it?" I ask.

"You'll see." He says. "It won't be painful."

"I didn't think it would be." I mutter.

Newt grabs my hand.

"It better shucking not be." He spits.

"Come along." He says and we all rise to our feet, walking out the door.

He leads us to a door with some kind of scanner. "I'll just need you to hop in."

"What is it?" I ask again.

"Just an MRI." He says. "We need to make sure everything is working properly."

I eye him suspiciously. "If you say so..."

"Thomas, you go first." He says.

I let go of Newt's hand. He looks at me anxiously.

"I'll be okay." I assure him and I climb into the machine.
