NEWT POV

After we all go through the MRI and are cleared, we were sent outside. The building is by the edge of a cliff. They said we have about 5 hours before the tests, but we had to stay outside for whatever reason. Thomas and I sit on the edge of the cliff, dangling our legs off, my head resting on his shoulder.

"This is stupid." Thomas says.

"Well, it's not like we can go anywhere." I point out. "There's a cliff on one side and a building on the other."

He nods. "I guess so." He leans over the edge. "What if I fall?"

I grab his shoulder. "Tommy, quit it."

He laughs, leaning farther.

"Tommy!" I cry.

"I'm fine, Newt, I won't fall." He says. "I'm not an idiot."

I pull him back. "Please quit it anyway."

"Aw, fine." he kisses my cheek.

I look over the edge, gripping the edge, hands shaking. It's actually really pretty in a terrifying kind of way. It makes me dizzy.

"Hypocrite." He says, laughing.

I chuckle, leaning back.

"Hey, Tommy?" I say.

"Mmm?"

"Do you think you'd die if you fell?" I ask.

"Probably." He says. "But I don't know for sure. Why?"

"No reason." I say.

"Bullshit." He says. "Tell me."

"No!" I say, laughing. "You wouldn't like it."

"Ugh, fine." He says.

I lean back, laying down on the hard ground. Thomas lays next to me, grabbing my hand.

"You think they'd really kill us?" I ask Thomas anxiously.

"I dunno." He says. "I think they'd hurt us pretty shucking bad if we do anything."

"What do you think they need us for?" I ask

"No clue, Newt." He says, running a hand through his hair.

"You think we'll die?"I ask.

"Nah." He says. "If they kill us, they wouldn't have us to use anymore."

I nod."I guess that's true."

"Hey," Thomas says. "I have an idea."

"What?" I ask.

He stands up and grabs my hands. I let him pull me up.  He lets me go and walks to the very edge of the cliff. He stands so his toes are hanging off.

"Tommy, What the shuck are you doing?" I ask anxiously. "Don't fall please."

"It's fun, come on." He says. I reluctantly move to stand next to him.

"Bloody hell this is stupid." I say, gripping his arm.

He chuckles. "No. It's not stupid. It's fun."

He grabs my hand, laughing. He hangs one leg over the edge.

"TOMMY!" I shout.

He laughs harder. "Come on, trust me, it's fun. You won't fall. I promise."

He pulls me against him. Our faces are inches apart.

"See?" He whispers. "Told you."

I kiss him, wrapping my arms around his waist.

"I never do seem to die around you, do I?" I say.

"No, just almost." He says, his breath brushing my face.

"True." I say.

"I wonder what it feels like." He says.

"What what feels like?" I ask.

"Dying." He says. "I wonder if there's really a big white light. If your life really flashes before your eyes."

"Don't think about that." I say. "Think about something else. Something happy."

He stares off the edge of the cliff. "You think they're gonna come get us soon?"

"Presumably." I say. "But I don't know."

Thomas nods. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense."

We sit back down, our hands intertwined, hanging over the edge of the cliff.

Just then, the rock beneath Thomas crumbles away. He falls but I grab his hands just in time so he doesn't fall to his death.

"Tommy!" I cry. "Oh my god!"

"It's alright." He says. "It's okay."

I stand up and try to pull him up but fall so I'm laying on my stomach. The others don't notice.

"Newt, just let go." He says.

"No." I say, tears falling down my face. "No, I'm not letting you go. Don't be stupid."

His hands start to slip from mine.

"Tommy, don't you dare let go." I say. "Please!"

"It's alright." He says. "There's not really anyway out of this."

"I can get the others." I say.

"No, you can't." He says. "Not without letting go. And they couldn't hear you if you shouted."

"Tommy, please!" I say. "Please, there has to be a way. You said it yourself, we can't give up. I can't lose you."

"This isn't giving up, Newt," He says. "This is accepting defeat. There's no way to save me. It's okay."

"It's not okay." I say, my whole body shaking. "Please, Tommy, please don't let go."

"It's okay." He says again.

"I can't lose you!" I say. "You're all I have left. Please, don't let go. I can't be alone. I can't do it. You're the one who always saves us. Please."

"I love you." He says.

"Last time you almost died, you didn't! Remember?" I say. "I can save you! I can!"

"Newt, just tell me you love me and let me go." He says.

One of his hands drops out of mine, the other threatening to do the same.

"TOMMY!" I cry.

"Newt, please." He says.

"I-I love you." I sob. "B-but please don't let go."

"I'm sorry." He says. And he lets go.
