There still wasn't any evidence or any witnesses for the case. The surveillance footage was not even an option. The camera's were disabled. It could need quite some time to get any clues for this case, although any mistake could leave a trail and follow up to the killer.
"Hey Ryuzaki?" You asked while working on the computer.
"What is it?" He looked up for a brief moment.
'Have you ever traveled?" You asked still staring at your screen.
"I have actually, I went to Spain for a case once. Why'd you ask?" He responded while turning back to his computer.
"I wondered what it'd be like, in another county. I've only been in Japan, I've seen other countries on the TV but that's it. Was it nice, in Spain?"
You had always wondered how the rest of the world looked. From what you had seen on the TV it sure was different from Japan. You really liked Sweden, it seemed so peaceful. So calm.
"Personally I didn't like it all to much, the heat there lowered my concentration. The surroundings actually where nice." He responded to your question.
"I don't like heat either, it makes me feel exposed and sticky for some reason." You agreed.
"Exposed?" The tone in his voice changed slightly.
"Yeah, you have to wear shorts or skirts when it's hot outside, I hate it." The words came out really dry.
"Hm, I understand. I don't like ot-" L got cut off by Watari speaking trough the computer.
"Ryuzaki! The killer has struck again, but this time it's different. 31 people in a cinema hall. They all just died the same way. It's only 5 minutes away from the bank."
"What, but that doesn't make any sense! What would he get out of that?" L responded confused.
"None of the victims had any connection to each other they didn't even have anything in common, the victims weren't planned. It was just a wrong place wrong time situation I think." You added.
"Well, this is getting rather interesting." Ryuk chuckled in the background.
"We have to make a move, this can't go on. We're on a ticking clock. We have to be a step ahead of him."
L spoke faster than normal, almost stressed. You had never seen him like this, he was always so calm on all of his cases.
"But he is a step ahead of us right now, he literally killed 50 people in 3 days." The words came out dry.
A few seconds passed, it was dead quiet. Then you saw that L's eyes widened, a spark grew in them until he quickly started typing.
"Both times in the same city, it will probably happen again. Both where in public places. Watari, I need to know what public places are close to the cinema and bank. Let's say a 600 meter radar." He said all in one breath.
"On it" Watari answered.
"I think the people where killed by some kind of gas, it makes the most sense. Some gasses can't be detected in the body. The bank had closed off ventilation so it must have came trough there." L rambled.
"I agree, but doesn't the ventilation in the cinema connect? Then all the other people in the cinema halls would've died as well." You responded confused.
A panic flushed over you, your muscles froze. What if somebody found the death note? They could have easily pulled this off.
No, Ryuk was still with you. If the death note was picked up he'd know right?
"No, the sound of each move could travel trough the ventilation so that wouldn't be an option. I'm almost a hundred precent sure that it was gas." L responded to your question.
You muscles relaxed again, if he was so sure about it then it must have been gas. There was no way that somebody had picked up the notebook, Ryuk wouldn't have missed that opportunity to watch something so interesting.
"Alright, but what could have been his motive? He couldn't have known all of them, they were random. Why would he rob that bank if he just wanted to kill people."
"I don't have any clue on that, yet.
When we bring him into custody, we'll get to know." L said calmly while biting into a colorful piece of candy.
You wondered what would happen if someone actually found the death note. You had never really thought about it, it didn't seem like such a problem until now. You hid the note when you were a child, so it wasn't hidden extremely well.
What if they wanted to start building there, or what if a child just dug it up. It was a risk, you needed to get out of this place as soon as possible. Either way, the death note had not been found until now.
No, you couldn't you know that for sure. Maybe Ryuk wouldn't even know if someone else picked it up, you had to ask him.
You didn't even have ownership of the death note anymore so the first person who would touch it would have ownership of it. Damn this really was a problem.
The voice of Watari broke your thoughts.
"There is a coffeeshop, a casino and hospital in the radar."
"Thank you, we need to set up a trap in the casino and coffeeshop. In the hospital is too many surveillance, he'd be stupid to even try that." L spoke.
"What kind of trap are You thinking of?" You wondered.
"We'll put a 24/7 police lookout in both buildings, right where the ventilation weak spot is. This will make sure no one can insert gas into the pipes."
"You solved the case quicker then I thought you would." You complimented L, you hadn't done that in a while.
It felt nice seeing the small smile that the complement left on the face of the detective, before it straightened again.
"It's my job." He responded harshly.
"Can't handle a complement?" You smirked.
He quickly looked away, back at his screen.
