TW: mention of suicide

A stabbing pain in your head aggressively woke you up, you needed a moment to adjust to the light and the headache.

You were laying on a couch and L was sitting at a desk with his knees up to his chest staring at a computer screen and typing away.

Your body felt really sore and your throat was dried out, you really needed some water.

The cuff was still around your wrist and it started to make a red mark. It was connected by a chain all the way to L's right wrist.

You lost all of your anger and you where actually kind of grateful that you where here, but there also was a bit of fear inside of you. You where chained up to unfamiliar man in a unfamiliar building. Well, at least it could not get a lot worse.

"Good to see you're up." L mumbled.

"Could I have some water please, I'm really thirsty."

His head now turned to look at you as he stopped typing. It kept quiet for a few seconds as he fully scanned you. You just tried to get up.

"Please sit back down."

"Why?"

He looked back at his computer and started typing again, until he spoke into the microphone standing next to his keyboard.

"Watari could you please bring a glass of water here, and some cake please. Thank you."

You sat back down as you played with the ring around your finger, listening to the sounds of the keyboard.

You really needed to come up with a plan.

The first thing you where going to do was befriend L, you had to get close to him in order to earn his trust. Then you could roam free and find a way to travel back to your home town and find the notebook.

If that all worked out you could finally see Ryuk again and then you could live happily ever after.

"So, Neera, who was this person Ryuk you always spoke to when you where a child? I was told it stopped when you were in the institution for about 2 years, correct? Why so sudden?

And I suppose you won't just tell how you got my and Wataris name or you would have by now." L spoke in a deep questioning monotone voice.

"I didn't have a lot of friends when I was little, so I just made one up. When I was locked up I got mad at him and I sent him away."

You just made that up, that might be believable.

"Why would you get mad at an invisible friend?" L mumbled.

"Well he was annoying."

"You sure are emotional."

Maybe there was a truth in that. You really could get mad easily, otherwise you wouldn't even be here. Dammit.

L went back to typing on his computer as you just laid down on the couch trying to ignore the horrific headache and the unhealthy dry throat.

Minutes passes by until Watari came in with a big bottle of water, a glass, cake and a bag of candy.

Greedy but thankful you took the water and glass and chugged two full glasses. L started munching away on the cake and you both sat in peace for the next few hours.

At a point you got so bored as you couldn't really move around because of the chain so you sat next to L and stared at his screen. He stopped typing.

"What is it?" He questioned.

"Oh, would you like some cake too?"

"No thanks, I'm bored. What are you doing?" You responded.

"Working on a case, would you like to see?" He asked with a tiny bit of enthusiasm in his monotone voice.

"Sure."

"So this male, Nakamoto Hikaru, sat on his bed and shot himself right trough the head. But there is something that doesn't fit, I've contacted his family and friends, his colleagues and basically anyone that knew him. They all said that he was a happy man, not one reason to do this."

"Interesting, show me the pictures of him and the room please."

"Hm." He purred.

L showed the pictures on the screen, the man was laying in his bedroom on his bed in a puddle of blood, he shot himself trough the right side of his head. The gun still in his right hand.

"Show me pictures of the living room."

He showed them all as you observed carefully.

"It was a murder, he did not kill himself."

"Interesting, how?"

"He was left handed, why would a left handed man shoot himself with his right hand?"

"Left handed?"

"The coffee table is on the left side of the couch, the coffee mug handle is turned to the left and there is butter on the butter knife on the right side of the blade and on top of that: all the power sockets, he only used the left ones, his notebook and pen are on the left side of the phone.

It is quite obvious, but to be sure you should check if the bullet matches the gun. If not, my theory has a 95% of being right.

Now who would have a interest in murdering this man and why?"

L just stared at you before saying:

"Impressive, well now we have a whole new look on the case. Watari please check if the bullet in his head matches the gun, contact everyone asking if he was ever threatened by anyone."

You turned around and walked back to the couch, chains rattling behind you as you took a sip of your water and sat back down.

An hour passed until the voice of Watari came trough the speaker announcing that indeed, the bullet did not match the gun the man was holding.

"Now something still isn't right, why would they put the wrong gun in his hand if they made it look like a suicide. They could at least made him hold the right gun. Maybe they wanted us to figure out that is was a murder, but why? What do they hope to achieve?"

"Hm, show me the pictures again please."

You walked over to the computer and looked at the pictures for a good few minutes.

"The man was shot trough the open window, I suspect he saw it coming so he brought a gun in order to protect himself.

All the doors where locked from the inside so nobody could have gotten in trough the doors. He was a grown man, he would not lock all his doors for no reason. He was scared.

The gun was a perfect opportunity to make it look like a suicide, they must have come in trough the open window and put the gun in the hand from where they shot him."

"Seems like a bit of a stretch." L responded with a bit of doubt.

"Just a theory based on all the facts, you should check from what angle the man could have been shot trough the window and see if there are any abandoned buildings within shooting reach of the matching gun.

Then the police will be able to look for fingerprints." You ranted.

"You surely are quick."

"I was alone for years, what did you expect?"

"Not this." L responded in his deep voice.

He smirked for a moment and then went back to his computer.
