Lucky me
Yeah that's not a phrase that I'm familiar with. My life has been plagued with misfortune since I was a born. I wouldn't consider myself overtly clumsy, it's more than that, it's pure unluckiness. That's not even a word, yet it's the story of my life.
My parents named me Paedi, not Peedee, but Paedi, like Paediatric. Everything was down hill from there, sometimes literally. My sister got the name Tallulah, which is much nicer. Then my mum had to leave us due to mental illness, I broke my leg when a branch under me snapped at twelve while I was climbing a tree. Then I failed my first driver's test on my sixteenth birthday, when the breaks didn't work and the car rolled down the hill into someones front yard.
Yeah, I'm not lucky, not even when we moved to Forks did my luck change, or so I thought.
Paedi's P.O.V
It was my first day at a new school in a new town and I was not siked. I was notoriously unfortunate when it to came to everything. Sports, relationships and of course general life. I often did my best to stay under the radar because of this, I always ended up as the butt of the joke thanks to my lack of luck.I pulled my covers back and with bleary eyes waddled out of my room and to the bathroom. The door swung open and I barely missed my younger sister coming out. She ducked passed me fully dressed and hair straightened, brush still in hand.
"Morning. You better hurry up, we've only got half an hour." Lulu said as she swept her brown hair over her shoulder with her brush and entered her room across the hall from mine. I sighed and shut the bathroom door behind me, greatful dad showered at like 5 in the morning so I only had my sister to fight for the shower.
I showered and dried off before walking back to my room wrapped in a towel. I pulled on some jeans and a cream coloured, turtle neck, sweater for the cold Forks air. I put on a pair of fluffy bed socks and then pushed my feet into my black polka-dot, yellow gumboots before exiting my room to get my contact lenses. I was Short sighted, no I'm not blind, yes I can see you if you stand in front of me, but no I can't see how many fingers you're holding up when standing ten paces away.
I picked up my blue case and opened it, leaning towards the mirror as I put my right lens in. I blinked a few times as my eye adjusted to the foren object I put in every morning. I pinched my second lens and leant agaisnt the counter again. As I made to put the lens in, Macy, Lulu's cat jumped up on the bench beside me and I yelped in suprise, the jet black cat jumped and skittered away in fright. I sighed as I tried the calm my heart. I looked down a my finger tip where my lens had been, to find it missing.
"Shit!" I cursed as I looked around the bench and basin. It wasn't there. I crouched down and raked my eyes across the tiled floor.
"You've got to be kidding me." I said to myself in disbelief as I spotted the clear lens sitting ontop of Macy's cat litter tray. I let out a strangled sound as I stood back up and proceded to remove my other lens. I cursed under my breath as I ducked back into my bedroom.
Glancing at the clock it saw it was already 7:40, and nearly fell over the stuffed elephant on my floor. I began throwing my clothes around my room looking for my old glasses. I opened one of the two boxes I'd yet to unpck and sighed in relief at the sight of the black glasses case. I shoved the glasses in my bag and through it over my shoulder as I dashed down the stairs.
"Ready?" Tallulah asked as she stood by the front door with her back pack over her shoulder. I nodded quickly as I grabbed my keys from the bowl by the door.
"Bye Macy!" My sister called into the house as she followed me out, locking the door behind us. Dad had long since left for the day, he wasn't supposed to start till seven thirty in the morning, but there'd been a suspicious death, on his third day no less. I put the key in my car door unlocking it as I climbed in the old Ford. It was a faded two door car with manual locking and windows you had to wind.
"For a second I thought we'd be late for our first day." Lulu said as she placed her bag at her feet and I started the engine before pulling my glasses out of my bag, throwing it in the back.
"Me too." I replied honestly as I slid my glasses on and pulled out of the drive way. Lulu opened her phone to give me directions as I glanced sideways at her. She was wearing high-waisted jeans and a turquoise coat, her hair straightened and her make-up done. How did she have the time to look so put together?! Oh god! I forgot to brush my hair! I pulled down the visa mirror and tried taming my hair as we stopped at the lights, the only set in town.
"Why are you wearing glasses? What happened to your hair?!" Lulu said as she looked at me with mortification. I sighed as the light turned green and I turned.
"Got a hair-tie I can borrow?" I asked as I adjusted my glasses uncomfortably. I wasn't used to wearing them, and they were the pair I only ever wore at home, I'd been wearing contacts for four years.
"Here." Lulu said as she handed me a tie and I thanked her as we pulled into the parking lot of the school. I stopped the car and quickly pulled my long dark hair up into a messy pony tail. I grabbed my bag from the back and climbed out of the car, slamming my door shut. It was the only way it would stay shut. I locked the car after Tallulah got out and turned to look around the car park.
"Let me do something about your hair." Lulu said as she stopped beside me with a disapproving shake of her head. I sighed as she undid the hair tie, painfully raked her hands through my half wet hair, before pulling it into a stylish messy bun on top of my head.
"Thanks." I said as I adjusted my glasses again the backs of my ears already starting the hurt from the arms. Gees these glasses are old.
We made our way into the main school building and weaved our way to the front office without to much trouble. People seemed to stare, but I imagine it was due to the small town and everyone knowing everyone sorta thing. It meant outsiders were undecided yet. Were they good, were they bad? Nice, weird? It was all yet to be determined.
"Hi, we're the Hendersons. I'm Paedi, year eleven and this is Tallulah year eight." I explained to the lady behind the desk.
"Oh we're so excited to have you joining us here at La Push High. Two new students, its getting wild around here. We don't often have new comers in La Push or Forks." The office lady happily chatted away to us. We lived in Forks but were attending the reservation school because years 7- 12 where all on the same grounds, rather than the two of us going to separate Forks High schools. The office lady pulled out our timetables and signing slips.
"These are yours and I'll give you a map as well. Welcome and good luck!" She said as she handed me a map. We exited the office and kept to the wall of the hall as students buzzed by, glancing and staring at us.
"Not sure how one map for two of us is gonna be all that helpful?" Lulu said as she glanced over it. I handed it to her and shrugged my shoulders.
"You take it, I'll find my way around. Meet you at my car at final bell?" I suggested as I turned to her. We'd be in different parts of the school due to the year eleven and twelves being in a separate area. Tallulah nodded in agreement before giving a wave and smile and disappearing into the crowd.
