Elodie was jerked from her sleep by her mother in the dead of night.

"Grab your jacket!" Mum was shoving a backpack into my arms before my vision could clear of sleep. My sister was in the same position as she stumbled from her bed next to mine, pulling her dressing gown on over her pyjamas, a backpack on her bed too.

"Com'on guys, hurry up!" Our older brother was in our doorway, a huge backpack on his back as his wild eyes were reflected in the white light that shone through our bedroom window.

"Get down!" Dad's voice rang out as he tackled our brother to the floor.

BANG! BANG! BANG! Gunshots sounded and popped as our window shattered and splinted across my face as I dropped to the floor.

I was jerked from my sleep, my mum was shaking my shoulders and saying something I could quite understand yet. It was still pitch black outside, no light getting through the gap in the curtains.

"Grab your jacket!" Mum was shoving a large pack into my arms before my vision could clear of sleep. My sister, Leana was in the same position as she stumbled from her bed next to mine, pulling her dressing gown on over her pyjamas, a matching pack on her bed.

"Com'on guys, hurry up!" Ian, our older brother was in our doorway, a huge backpack on his back and strapped across his chest as his wild eyes were reflected in the white light that shone through our bedroom window.

"Get down!" Dad's voice rang out as he tackled our brother to the floor, milliseconds before the window shattered.

BANG! BANG! BANG! Gunshots whizzed and popped as our window splintered across my face as a horrible pain sprang from my shoulder and I dropped to the floor, Leana across from me doing the same.

"Lee, Ell! Move girls, move!" Dad dragged us by an arm each, Ian was ahead of us as we crawled across the carpet of our room, into the hall.

"Go! Go! Go!" Dad yelled as we clambered to our feet and dad shoved us after our brother. Leana gripped my right hand, as Ian grabbed hers and pulled us along. My shoulder screamed in burning pain as we were pulled along, out the front door.

"Where's mum?!" Leana shouted in fear as tears spilled down her cheeks as she tried to turn back to Dad, but he was still inside.

It was chaos outside. The entire small town we'd called home our whole lives was in flames. Men in black vest with guns pulled families from their homes. Next door to us, the young boy Leana had baby sat was pulled from his front door by a man in black as his mother chased after him screaming and bloody.

I pulled Leana to my chest as she turned in the direction of their screams. I pressed her face to my shoulder as a shot dropped Mrs Patrick to the grass as her son screamed and cried. He was silenced moments later as another shot rang out.

"Keep moving!" Ian yelled at us as he gripped my arm and dragged me along as I pulled Leana with me as she shook and cried. Fear and confusion pulsed through me as I looked around at the chaos and death. The noise was deafening. Screams, cries, gunshots, bombs, fire, yelling.

I stumbled as Ian shoved us into the backseat of the car and slammed the door shut.

"Ian, drive!" Dad was carrying mum in his arms, and I wasn't sure if she was even breathing as he quickly placed her in the empty seat beside me as Leana sat on my other side, cowering into me. Dad threw himself into the passenger's seat and didn't even get to close the door before Ian was already speeding away from the chaos down the forest lined dirt road.

Bullets pinged off the back of the car and the glass behind us shattered and rained down on us. I shielded Leana with my body before sitting up again to check mum.

"Where do we go?" Ian was asking Dad, but I couldn't really hear him as Lee sobbed loudly beside me and I leaned over mum's still form.

"Mum?" I whispered as I pushed her blood soaked hair from her face. Her head rolled and her face was towards me as her eyes peaked open just slits. She was breathing, shallowly. I noticed her hand grasping her neck and quickly took off my jacket.

"Here, ma. Let me help." She barely nodded at my words, the only real indication she'd heard me was when her hand dropped from its spot, landing limply in her lap.

Blood was pouring from the side of her neck and she momentarily gurgle and coughed tiredly as blood seeped through her lips.

Tears blurred my vision as I pressed my jacket against the bullet wound in her neck. My shoulder, neck and arm throbbed in protest at the movement but adrenaline helped me to focus on mum.

"What the hell is going on!?" Ian shouted as he slammed his hands against the stirring wheel.

"Calm down." Dad was telling him.

"Ell?" Leana was crying my name softly.

Mum rose her bloody hand to my face and softly placed it there as her eyes closed, then opened slightly again. She was trying to hold on.

"Dad? Dad, we need a hospital. Mum's dying." I turned to face the front. None of us wearing seatbelts, but no one could careless. Leana's sobbing quietened and Ian stopped yelling, as did Dad as he turned in his seat to let his dark eyes land on mum. I swallowed thickly when I saw the fear in them. I quuckly turned back to mum not wanting to look into the loss and despair he already held in his eyes, like she'd already died.

"It's gonna be okay ma." I whispered softly as I swept her hair back and leant my forehead against hers. Beside me Leana leant her head agaisnt my back as I leant my head on Mum's good shoulder, pressing my jacket agaisnt her neck. Tears freely and silently rolled down my cheeks, mixing with the blood soaked against Mum's shirt as Lee sobbed softly against me.
