Jade went home. She had 5 messages on her phone.
"Probably from Ken." Jade thought.
Jade closed her eyes and fell asleep on her couch. Her alarm went off. It was 6:00 in the morning. She shut it off and got out of bed. Jade picked up her home phone and played her messages.
"Hey, Jade. Ken here. Just wondering why you left. Was it me? Kay bye," the 1st message said.
Second message was 5 minutes away from that one."Jade. Hurry. It.... It is going to be too late! AGH! STOP!" the second message played.
Jade dropped the phone. It was from Mr. Barter. She could tell. She quickly picked up the phone. The third message began.
"You were too late. Now you must pay!" said the third message.
Jade was shaking. She played the 4th message. It was sent when Jade and Rick were at Mr. Barters.
"Hey, Ken here. Jade? You okay? I know I left a message 2 hours ago, but usually you call right back. Can you meet me at work tomorrow? If it's out if your way, that's fine. Kay, bye." It was from Ken.
Jade played the very last one. It was sent when Jade just pulled in her driveway.
"Babe? You okay? It's Rick. Just wanted to make sure ya got home safely. Okay. Buh-bye." Last one was from Rick.
Jade drove to the coffee shop where Ken works.
"Is Ken here?" Jade called."He's in the back. Ken!" An old woman at the cash register replied.
Ken walked out. He spotted Jade and rushed over.
"Hey! What happened last night?" Ken frowned."Oh.. I got a call from a man who needed help. I took care of it though." Jade shrugged her shoulders.
"Oh. That's it then?" Ken scratched his head.
"Pretty much. So wanna meet up at the park?" Jade smiled.
"Sure. Promise me that you won't bail on me." Ken smirked.
"Promise." Jade nodded.
"So, want a coffee on the house? Er do you need to be somewhere?" Ken asked.
"I'll take a coffee. Then I got to go to the police station and check up on Rick. Ya know?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"Okay. It'll take me a sec." Ken went over to the coffee maker.
Ken came back shortly. The coffee smelled delicious.
"Mmm. Pumpkin?" I sniffed the coffee."Yes. Your favorite right?" Ken smiled.
"Obviously? Thanks, Ken. See ya at the park later. 6:00 sound okay?" Jade stood up.
"Sounds good to me. Kay, bye." Ken said.
Jade got in her police car. She drove to the police station, grabbed her coffee, and walked in. Rick had his head resting in his hands which is a natural thing for Rick when he is stressed.
"Rick? What's the matter?" Jade patted him on the back and sat next to him."I can't find anything on this Mr. Barter guy. Nothing comes up babe. What am I supposed do? He does exist. I've talked to him before." Rick frowned.
"Maybe he had a fake last name? Uhmm do you know his first name? A relatives name maybe?" Jade raised a brow.
"I used to live by him as a kid. His mothers name was... Aw... What was it.. Sharon? No... Was it Mmmm? Martha! That's it! Martha Barter! Her maiden name was... Bennett. I'll look up Bennett." Rick jumped up.
"Maybe he went by Mr. Bennett then? But that wouldn't make any sense? Would it?" Jade was confused.
"Aha! I found a document on Martha Bennett/ Barter! It is for her funeral." Rick exclaimed.
The document read: Martha Bennett passed away on July 5th 1989. Martha lived with her husband(Calvin Barter), her two sons( Nick Barter and Jakob Barter) and daughter ( Sylvia Barter). Her funeral will be held in Barner Meadows on July 7th 1989.
"Does it say how she died?" Jade asked.
"Nope. Mr. Barter's first name was Jakob. I remember it now. His sister was like 20 years younger than him. I'll look her up." Rick said.
Rick typed in Sylvia Barter. Four people came up. Two were married. The other two weren't. Rick ignored the married Sylvia Barter's. He clicked on the blonde Sylvia Barter. She was 55 years old.
"That's her. Sylvia was 3 years older then me. Well that's what she told me. She must've lied. Just as pretty as she used to be though." Rick smiled.
"Okay... What does it say about her?" Jade rolled her eyes.
"It says here that she lives in Kosto estates. It's an elderly home... She's only 55 Right? Well let's go see her."
"Alright. How long will this take?" Jade tilted her head.
"About a half hour, babe. I mean it depends on if she's the right lady or not. If she is, she might have bunches of stories to tell us. If it isn't, we can just leave. Why do you ask?" Rick replied.
"Me and Ken are hanging out at the park at 6:00." Jade frowned.
"Aww... How adorable. Well sweetheart it's only 1:30. We should be back by 3:00. 4:00 at the latest." Rick high fived me.
"Okay... It's not a date by the way." Jade laughed.
