They arrived at Mara Lee's house. Mara kissed her boyfriend good-bye and got into the cab. The back seat was a four seater. Mara cried as they drove towards the airport.
"What's wrong, Mara?" Rick asked her."I'm going to miss my boyfriend... He can't come to California because he needs to take care of our dogs. Plus his job..." Mara sniffled.
"I'm sorry babe..." Rick patted her on the back.
"Excuse me? I'm not your babe! I'm Nick's babe! Not your's old man!" Mara rolled her eyes.
"Sor-ry!" Rick threw up his hands.
"Mara, he didn't mean it like that. Do not speak to him like that." Jade squinted.
"My apologies sir." Mara mumbled.
They all got onto the plane going to California. Jade made sure that the twins sat next to each other across from herself and Ken. Rick sat in front of all of them. Jade fell asleep on Kens shoulder.
"Hey Mara. Did you happen to bring all the letters Sylvia sent to you for evidence?" Rick spoke."Yes, sir. I figured you'd need more since you asked for the other one." Mara replied softly.
"May I see them?" Rick asked.
"Of course. I've got them all inside this shoebox. Here." Mara handed him the letters.
Rick took out one from two weeks ago. It read:
Dear Mara,
Do you realize how happy I am to get Enough letters from you to literally Make curtains? I really enjoy the Oliver Twist book but I lost it in my Never ending pile of magazines. It was Such a mess! A birthday gift idea?:)Love,
SylviaRick couldn't find anything wrong with this letter. He quickly noticed the word DEMONS going down the side of the note. He gasped. Rick tapped Ken's shoulder since he was the only one awake.
"Sylvia coded DEMONS into her letter. See?" Rick showed him the letter."I'm sure she didn't mean it... I mean, ya know? Let me tell you something. Jade has had enough crap put onto her! She doesn't need this! Tell her you didn't find anything! She listens to you! Make this Barter crisis vanish..." Ken whispered.
"Why should I listen to you?" Rick barked.
"Because... Every time I look into her eyes I don't see that wonderful look. I see stress. I see depression... Not that loving look. Your part of the problem." Ken had tears in his eyes.
"I understand, Ken. I'll help her forget about it." Rick promised.
