Riley's POV

I sat on the chair confused, and broken after the events in the past hour. In my mothers letter she had told me the question I had pondered for most of my life. The answer to the question that had brought so any fights and questions in the past. She has wrote in the letter the name of my birth father, not only his name but also the paperwork that now makes him my legal guardian. How could I trust the man that left me and my mother to now take care of me?

Luke Hemmings. That was the name of my father, he worked at California Medical Hospital which was about an half hour car ride from here. I didn't have the money to take a taxi and it was probably only a few hours to walk. Plus the walk would give me think about everything, I still needed to plan the funeral but I was trying to take it one step at a time. I stopped home as it was on the way to the hospital anyway. I grabbed some clean clothes, and a few necessities before continuing. Thankfully I grabbed my skateboard so the walk would go faster.

I made it most of the way and was only about 15 minutes away when it started to downpour rain on me. I decided to grab my skateboard and just make a run straight for the building. I entered the hospital probably looking like a mess, my eyes were puffy from tears and I hadn't slept or eaten very good the past few days.

" Hi i'm looking for dr. Hemmings" I asked the lady upfront

" Ah yes, Dr. Hemmings do you have an appointment?"

" No, but I think he will see me"

" He is chief of the cardio floor, he has many appointments today. Your welcome to wait incase something opens up" she said rudely

He was a chief of a whole floor? Who was this guy?

" Y es please" I said going to sit down

I felt so lost at the moment like I didn't have anything to go back to. What would happen when he refuses to be my guardian? I missed my mom. The weight of the whole day hit me and I fell asleep in my wet clothes and my head leaning against the window.

I woke up to a lady shaking me, the nurse from before. It seemed to be a few hours later the sun had begun setting and the floor seemed to be more empty.

" Dr. Hemmings will see you now" she said bringing me to his office

I walked into his large office, he sat at the desk chair and stood to greet me. He was tall, blonde blue eyes, very similar to my own.

" Hello-" he cut himself off when he noticed me

" I can't treat minors alone, you will have to come back with your guardian. I'm sorry it's hospital policy" he sighed

" Hi, um i'm not here for treatment or anything, I just wanted to talk to you." he looked at me confused

" How can I help you?" he said motioning for me to sit

" So, there's no way to break this lightly and i've had a long day so here we go. My name is Riley and your my Dad." I blurted out leaving him speechless

" Listen kid, I have no time for these pranks just leave and I won't call security on you" he said standing

" No please this isn't a joke, My mom just passed from pancreatic cancer this morning. She left you as my guardian." I explained my voice cracking

" Please" I begged

" Who was your mother" he asked closing his eyes tightly "

" Michelle Davis" his eyes flashes for a second

" She was pregnant?" he said overly flustered but I mean who wouldn't be

I guess he didn't leave, he just didn't know.

" How old are you" he said looking to me

" 14 I turn 15 in August"

" Holy Shit" he said sitting in his office chair

This was a very awkward situation for me currently.

" Look, you just have to sign the paper and we'll go to court and get me emancipated. I wouldn't expect you to take care of me" I said honestly

He stared at me silently for a minute before speaking

" If that's what you really truly want I will help you." he stated

I nodded

" Why are you all wet?" he asked pointing towards my jacket

" it's raining outside" I stated

" You walked here?!" he said surprised

" Yeah" I said blankly

" First things first i'm going to give you some clothes since yours are wet and check for hypothermia then we can sort this out" he said as I nodded

He handed me a sweatshirt and some sweatpants that were definitely not my size and showed me to the bathroom. I changed and walked back putting my clothes into the trash.

"You don't want to keep them?" he questioned

" My mother hugged me in those clothes today I just don't think I could handle it" I said honestly
