The day of the expedition arrived almost as quickly as it had been announced. The aura of the dining hall seemed darker than usual during breakfast. Barely anyone spoke as we all ate in uncomfortable silence.
Shortly after breakfast everyone prepared their gear and saddled up. I sat in my cart and looked over the medical supplies for the third time that day. I was positioned in the middle back row of the formation so I could retrieve anyone who's left behind while the rest of the squad continues.
Before we left Hange approached me and hugged me tightly while wishing us good luck.I took a few deep breaths and tried to push my worries aside while we took off in the direction of the gate.
After a while of riding we reached the wall, which was surrounded by a small town. Civilians crowded around the streets muttering to themselves while we approached the gate.
"This is a complete waste of our taxes."
"They'll just come back empty handed again while losing another dozen people."
"We really are just willing feeding the titans at this point."
I felt my stomach sink as I listened to their words. I took a shaky breath and squeezed my eyes shut in attempt to block them out.
We reached the gate after what felt like an eternity. Erwin gave a speech I only half listened to before the gates began to open.
The horses began to move forward as I looked at the outside world for the first time.

We rode for a few minutes in peace while I marveled at the view. It honestly didn't look much different than within the walls, but I still felt tears prick my eyes knowing I was experiencing my brother dream.
'I hope you can see this Ben.'Suddenly a red flare shot into the sky from somewhere ahead in the formation. A titan was spotted.
I felt my heart rate increase and began sweating slightly. I hadn't seen a titan since my first time four years ago, and even then the closest was blocks away. The realization of my situation set in. I was in titan territory.
We continued at the same pace as gas being expelled from ODM gear could be heard in the distance. I took control over my emotions quickly, reminding myself I was officially on the job as of now. My goal was to save as many people as possible.
I kept my eyes peeled as I scanned my surroundings looking to see if anyone had been injured. We passed a few titan corpses that had already begun disintegrating. I tried my best to ignore them as to not panic further. My eyes fell upon a person lying face down on the ground next to a steaming titan. I ordered one of the cadets stationed next to me to retrieve them, they complied and rode over to the person, returning swiftly and placing them in the cart. I quickly looked over the younger boy to see what his worst injury was while talking to him."I need you to tell me what hurts the most sir." I stated calmly, looking down at him as his face contorted in pain while he panted.
"Scratched... side..." the boy breathed out. I quickly listed his shirt to reveal deep gashes from a titans fingernails on his abdomen. I grimaced at the sight and began rinsing the wound with water before looking closely at the cuts.
"Good news in they didn't go deep enough to hurt any internal organs, bad news is you're gonna need stitches. This is going to hurt a bit, just try to bear with me." I told the boy while applying pressure to his side with a cloth to stop the bleeding. I turned to grab a needle and some sutures and began to thread him up. He hissed loudly as I tugged on the ripped flesh. I winced at his reaction. I'd never had to treat a serious injury without painkillers before, it was hard seeing the poor kid writhe in agony.
I worked as fast as I possibly could while still sealing the wound properly so the worst would be over for him. After I was done I had a scout take him to a different cart so he could rest and I'd be able to help more people.
