1 YEAR LATER

The cold, refreshing water splashed against Elaine's face, successfully waking her up a little bit more. She had just gotten out of bed and was preparing for her first day at a new school.

The tired girl looked up from the bathroom sink and stared at her own reflection, analyzing her face just like she always did.

Her hazel eyes had purple bags underneath them due to the late night she had unpacking boxes into her new house. Her light brown- almost blonde- hair was laying flat against her scalp. She has always wished for curly, or even wavy hair- anything but the boring, straight mess she has always had.

Her naturally rosy cheeks had traces of acne on them, but nothing she couldn't hide with a dab of concealer. Elaine wasn't that big with makeup, so all she had to do to prep her face was add some mascara to her already-long lashes.

She had a simple face; nothing that really stood out and made her unique. Unlike most girls, being pretty or unique wasn't a goal of hers. Why should she care what others think of her? The only thing that matters is how she thinks of herself. That's the way it should be for everyone.

Looking away from the mirror and over at the clock, Elaine realized that she would be late if she didn't hurry up. She made a mad dash to her closet and picked out the first set of clothes that she could find, which was a black t-shirt and a black pair of jeans.

The idea is: If you wear all black, you can, hopefully, blend in and stay unnoticed by people.

No one looks twice at the girl in black.

She skipped down the stairs and greeted her mom, not expecting her to return any words back. Elaine's mom was never quite the same after her dad left them a couple years ago. It was always gloomy in their house; her mother's attitude really brought it down.

"Mom, I'm going to be home a little late because I have my therapy sessions, remember?" Elaine's soft voice gently called out to her mother.

The woman nodded blankly and continued to play with the breakfast food in the bowl in front of her.

Love you too... Elaine thought to herself as she slipped out of the front door and made her way to hell- oops... school.

Elaine has  been bullied all her life. That's actually the reason she moved- Well that, and her and her mother wanted to get away from the empty feeling her dad left in their old house. It obviously didn't fix anything though.

Honestly, Elaine didn't really expect this school year to be any different than the others. She knew she would get bullied but at least this time she was expecting it. She had her walls up and secured and it would take an immense force to knock them down.

Everyone laid their eyes on the new "emo" girl strolling down the halls. This was a fairly small town, so a new person joining the school was very unusual and a foreign concept to them.

Immediately, Elaine knew the stares weren't the good "wow, she's really pretty, I want to be friends with her" kind of stares. They were more like the "ew who the fuck is that weirdo" kind of stares.

Actually, they were all-together more like bitter glares rather than stares.

Even without knowing her, people could sense she was different. Maybe they've heard about her from her other schools? But does the news travel that far and that fast? Yes, she was somewhat crazy, and she was dubbed the "weirdo" at every school she has been to, but she can't help what she is in the eyes of others...

a freak.

Her thoughts get to her and it is impossible for anyone to understand what she is going through. No one understands her, and no one will ever be able understand this poor girl.

Elaine just kept her head low and made her way through the day trying not to draw any attention to herself.
