Elaine didn't remember much- all she knew was that she had just woken up in a room that was white. Like, really, really white. It didn't take long for her realize that she was in a hospital. The girl turned her head to the right and saw her mom sleeping on a couch that was set up next to her hard, hospital bed.
Her dizzy head was numb, and all of the white decor inside of the room wasn't helping the fuzziness she was feeling.
And, damn, these sheet were itchy.
A small grunt escaped Elanie's lips when she tried to sit up and escape the horrid piece of cloth, which ended up waking her mom, who has always been a light sleeper, in the process. The newly woken woman then proceeded to apologize profusely.
"Honey, I am so sorry. I was just so caught up with thinking about your father- I swear it'll never happen again. I love you so much baby. I'm so glad you're okay." The mother breathed out all at once.
Wait, "What happened?"
"Oh Elaine, I found you sinking in the bathtub. I started sobering up the second I saw you sitting under the water almost...almost... "
"Dead?" Elaine finished the sentence off for her.
Her fragile mom started sobbing and Elaine immediately started to feel guilty for putting her through all of this pain, even though she was the one who hit her.
"Mom, it's ok..."
It really wasn't fine at all, but Elaine needed someone, anyone, right now and she would take whoever she could get. She reached over and gave her distressed mom a soft, hesitant hug, remembering what happened last time she tried to embrace her.
"Knock, knock" a gentle knocking rapped on the thick, wooden door. A doctor walked in before either of the girls could object to his intrusion on their special mother-daughter moment.
Yes, it is okay, you can come in. Elaine sarcastically remarked in her head.
"Hello, my name is Dr. Piper." The middle-aged man spoke gleefully.
Dr. Piper was considerably thin and had a head full of gray hair that looked as if it was glowing under the fluorescent lighting of the hospital. In his right hand he was holding a clipboard, and in his left he held a cup of coffee, perhaps trying to energize himself after a long shift.
"Hello, Dr. Piper." Elaine's mom politely greeted.
"So, what do I have to do to get out of here?" the hospitalized girl bluntly murmured, getting straight to the point.
"Elaine, don't be so rude." Her mother scolded while squinting her eyes at the younger girl.
The doctor shook his head while smiling "Ahh, it's perfectly okay." Elaine rolled her eyes. "But to answer your question Elaine, you are recommended to go to your therapy classes again. The sign-in sheets show that you've been skipping the last couple of your classes."
Oh yeah, she was ditching those to hang out with Michael.
"And what if I don't go?" Elaine challenged.
"Well, then you would have to have a stay in our mental ward here for a little while." The doctor answered, seemingly indifferent to her saltiness.
"What?! I am not staying in a crazy house!" she spoke in a panicked tone while flailing her arms as much as she could with needles still attached to them.
Her mother stepped in this time. "Of course you won't be going to a mental ward... because you're going to the therapy groups." She stared at Elaine, giving a, yet another, pointed look at her.
Cue the eye rolling.
"So it's set. I'll see you soon Elaine, you're free to go home now." The doctor smiled in an annoyingly cheerful way as he walked out of the room.
That night, Elaine lay awake in her bed at home with thoughts swirling around. She is definitely not excited for her next therapy group. This time it was going to be a completely new group of teens; she was always bad at meeting new people. Also, there's a slim chance Luke could be there.
Elaine has a good reason for why she doesn't like hanging around Luke. He's a really good guy, probably one of the nicest people she knows, but he did something. Something bad.
He doesn't know he did it though. Nobody does,
except Elaine.
