Chapter 15

Jayden

The shrill ringing of the alarm clock jolted Jayden awake from his dreamless sleep. He rolled to the edge of the bed in an attempt to switch the thing off but unfortunately, he lost his balance and felt his ass connect with the floor so hard that he swore there would be a hole in the floor where his butt had been. After switching off that damn thing, he made his way to the bathroom while rubbing his sore ass. He didn’t want to go to school, how could he go to school with Taylor still fighting to wake up in the hospital? But he couldn't go to the hospital, he'll get kicked out of the ward by his dad. Which only leave him with one choice. He groaned in frustration. His dad had to care so much now. He swung his bag over his shoulder and headed out.

He dismissed the idea of driving to school and decided to walk instead. He liked walking, it helps him think, and with his ear piece on, blocking out the world, he actually felt at peace. Well, more at peace than he ever felt in the last two days. It was a relieve that he lives quite close to the school though, and he reached there just 10 minutes before the first bell.

As he walked to his locker, students turned and stared at him. Some turned back to whisper to their friends about something while others gave him sympathetic smiles. Word spreads fast around here. Jayden thought. After retriving his chemistry book, he filed into class like everyone else and went to his usual seat. Just that nothing is usual as the seat beside his was empty. His heart ached at the absence of Taylor's endless babbles during class, the paper notes thrown his way, her laughter when the class joker make some lame joke about molecules. He wasn't in the mood for lessons, not when every class reminds him so much about Taylor. The rest of the class and the first half of the day passed by in a blur as he basically tuned out and stared out of the window all through the classes. The teachers didn't seem to mind though, maybe because they thought he needed his time alone.

Pretty soon the bell indicating lunch time rang. Feeling like he was operating on auto-pilot mode, he filled out of the class towards the cafeteria.

"Hey Jayden!" Someone called from behind. For a moment, he thought it was Taylor, but then again,  the voice was too manly to be Taylor's. He hadn't even had the time to finish turning his head when a very hard knuckle crashed into his right cheek. Jayden stumbled back but quickly regained his balance to come face to face with... Guess who?

Derrick.

Before he could react, another fist slammed itself against his lower jaw causing his head to snap to the right so hard, he thought his neck might snap apart like a twig.

"Dude! I so do not need this!" Jayden shouted at him. What the hell is this guy's problem? By now, people are gathering around and watching them intently like its an One Direction concert.

"You deserve it dickhead!" Derrick shouted back while swinging another punch towards him. This time, Jayden managed to duck.

"Yeah, and you have a pussy." Jayden smirked at him and ducked another on coming punch. "What's this about anyway?"

"You didn't protect Taylor like how you're supposed to asshole." Derrick said and Jayden's smirk evaporated. Jayden dodged Derrick's flying fists and crashed his own into Derrick's left eye.

'Its not up to you to decide how well I've done my job. What makes you think I didn't try to protect her from that damn car?!" Jayden scowled and punched Derrick in his cheek. He stumbled and scowled back.

"Cause she's still lying in the hospital unconcious!" Derrick yelled and Jayden felt his defences crumble away, taking another blow in his stomach. Yes, he thought, he failed to protect her. This was all his fault.

From the corner of his eye, he saw Derrick's fist flying towards him. Acting on instinct, he grabbed and twisted his wrist while sending his own fist towards his face, feeling the satisfying crunch of Derrick's nose bone under his fist. When he backed away, Jayden saw that he was bleeding from both nostrils. That sight would be hilarious on any ordinary day, but today was no ordinary day, and Jayden was suddenly not in the mood for laughter.

"It wasn't an accident." He said softly. He doubt anyone in the crowd would have heard him but judging from Derrick's expression and how he stopped coming at him. Yeah, he heard him.

"Principal Lake is coming!" Someone from the crowd shouted and the crowd scattered as quickly as it came. but Jayden and Derrick continued standing there, eyes burning into each other, sliently challenging each other while Derrick evaluate what he just heard.

"You two just can't stay away from each other for at least one week can't you?" Principal Lake began after the both of them took their seats opposite him in his office. He galnced at each of their battered faces and sighed.

"Look, I know that both of you are upset about what happened to Taylor Simons but that's no reason for you to start a fight on my school grounds." Principal Lake said. He took off his really thick pair of glasses and used his shirt to wipe them. "I do not want to complicate this matter further, but the both of you will have to do detention for the rest of the week starting today." He placed his glasses back into place on his face and crossed his plump arms across his chest while eyeing the both of them.

Detention? Jayden thought. He couldn't do detention. He have to visit Taylor.

"Mr Lake, I can't do detention, I have to see Taylor." Jayden argued but Principal Lake held up his hand.

"You can visit her after your detention." Principal Lake said with finality. Jayden wanted to scream in frustration, flip his giant oak table into his giant face. His jaw muscle clenched then unclenched while he tried to figure out his next arguement. As if on que, the school bell rang and Principal Lake clapped his hands together.

"Well, both of you better go get yourselves cleaned up before heading back to class." He said. Jayden stood from his chair with so much force that the chair toppled over and landed with a loud crash. He saw Principal Lake jump abit at the sound but he said nothing and walked out of the office.

2hours and 15 minutes later, Jayden slammed his locker shut, still fuming about the peanut brained principal and procceded to detention class. Surprisingly, Derrick was already there with the teacher dosing off at his desk. Jayden rolled his eyes at the sight.

"Did you drug that guy or something?" Jayden asked as he sat down behind him. Derrick rocked on the chair's hind legs and lean onto Jayden's desk.

"Apparantly, that guy's newborn baby is nocturnal, hence, his inability to stay awake through detention." Derrick explained in the matter of factly.

"Now, about what you said earlier, care to explain?" Derrick raised an eyebrow at him. Jayden sucked in a deep breath and launched into the explaination he gave Detective Basco.

When he finished, Derrick gave a low whistle. "That's some serious shit." He said. "Any idea who did it?"

"I don't know..." Jayden said thoughtfully. Suddenly there was a loud crash and Derrick disappeared from his line of sight. When Derrick's face resurfaced at the edge of Jayden's desk, Jayden couldn't help but smirk.

"Looks like gravity won this round huh?" Jayden said mockingly, trying hard not to laugh.

"Asshole." Derrick scowled at him. Surprisingly, Mr Teacher - in - charge of detention was still snoring away.
