Chapter 6
Jayden
Jayden stood in front of his apartment and sighed. He fished out his keys and went in. His dad was sleeping on the sofa snoring away with beer bottles and peanut shells scattered everywhere. Jayden sighed again and began to gather up the rubbish and threw it into the bin. As he entered the living room, his father snorted and pried his eyelids open. His eyes were blood shot from the hangover.
"Jay, could you pour me a glass of water?" He asked through cracked lips, his voice was raspy and dry.
"Its Jay with a den, in case you have forgotten your son's name, and go get one yourself."
"If I'm able to get one myself, I would already have, right?" His dad countered.
Jayden rolled his eyes and went to get that glass of water. He placed it on the coffee table and made his way down the narrow hallway to his room. He laid on his bed and stared at the celling fan and daydreamed. Jayden wished his mom was here. She would know what to do with dad, to help him get back to his feet. But too bad, she was too far out of reach. Jayden closed his and fell asleep.
*Jayden's POV!* (Dream~)
It was raining heavily, everything was blurred by rain. I was 12 years old and my mom was pulling me forward, running, tripping, feeling our way blindly in the rain and night with my dad close behind.
"Hurry Caleb! Run faster!" My dad pushed us forward. Caleb was the old me, a scared, broken little boy. All I heard was multiple foot steps running after us, my dad yelling for us to speed up.
All of a sudden, gun shots started to fill the air and my mom in front of me fell. I stumbled over her and saw that my mom's knee was shot.
"Mom!" I cried, there were shouts everywhere.
"They're coming!" My mom said through clenched teeth, wet hair clung onto her face, eyes filled with agony from the bullet wound.
"Paul! Take him and run! Go!"
"I'm not leaving you Kate! Caleb needs you!" My dad tried to carry mom up, but she was in too much pain to move.
"Just leave me! They're coming soon! You got to take Caleb and leave, he don't deserve this. I'll only slow you down!" She pushed me over to dad. "Run!"
My dad hesitated for awhile longer. The shouts are nearing. Finally my dad took my hand. "I love you Kate." He said and touched her face.
"I love you too."
My dad dragged me away from mom and both of us hid behind the dumpsters just as the men carrying guns arrive. They stood around my mom, she was still alive, breathing.
"Both of you, go search for that father and son." The tallest man ordered.
"Than what about her?"
"She's still alive, we could probablly get some information from her. Drag her back."
"Yes sir.'
One of them tried to carry her but she started stuggling violently. Eventually, two men grabbed hold of her ankles and dragged her along with them. My mom trashed and screamed but she was no match against those two.
I opened my mouth to shout for her but my dad's palm met my lips, covering it. I pulled and fought back but I was much weaker than him. Even with the rain and dark night, I saw it crystal clear. I saw them drag my mom away by the ankles, I saw her trashing, clawing the ground, screaming. But no one answered her pathetic cries for help. I watched them drag her away, out of sight. I've never felt so helpless in my life. My dad let go of me and I slumped against the filthy brick wall.
Jayden's eyes flew open and found himself back in his room. He waited for his breathing to slow and swiped away sweat on his forehead. He sat up and noticed that it was almost evening. In the past when he had nightmares like these, his mom would be beside him. But now, the space beside his bed was empty.
"Mom." He called out, but no reply came
