Chapter 11

Jayden

Jayden unlocked the front door and was greeted with the sour smell of vomit which caused bile to rise up his throat but he swallowed it back down. This was so different from that soothing coffee aroma he breathed in exactly half an hour ago. As he went inside the house, he spotted his father lying on the couch again with as arm and leg dangling over the edge of the couch with a newspaper covering his face while he snored his day away. Jayden went to the bathroom to take a quick leak but was forced out of the bathroom door again as he found the source of the stentch.

"Dad! For goodness sake! Flush after you puke your guts out! God!" Jayden yelled into the living room only to get an ampilfied snore as an answer. Jayden sighed in frustration and pinched his nose while flushing the toilet bowl. He made a mental note to get air refresheners tomorrow. Its a relief that they never had any guests in the house. Jayden did his daily routine of clearing the coffee table from beer bottles and he also replaced the newspaper with a damp cloth. After his bath, he left his hair to dry on its own and started to do his English homework. After four hours of homework, Jayden felt himself dosing off.

~Jayden's POV~

There was darkness as far as I could see. Darkness that seemed to stretch out forever and ever. As my eyes adjusted to my surroundings, the darkness around me seemed to be alive, moving, shifting and sliding past each other, occasionally lashing out at me. I started to walk forward. The dark tunnel lasting for forever and the darkness seemed to be snarling at me. Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed behind followed by the sound of someone dragging an iron bar across the floor. My heartbeat quickened and I instinctvely started running. But no matter how far I run, the echos will always be behind me. The faster I ran, the louder it gets.

"Caleb!" I stopped dead in my tracks. Panting heavily, heart hammering against my ribs so hard that I thought it might break. I spun crazily around, searching for the source of that voice. That voice...

"Caleb!" The voice came again, this time, it echoed thoughout the darkness. I realised that the dragging and footsteps have stopped.

"Mom?" I called out into the darkness. "Mom!" I cried out again.

"Caleb run!" Mom's voice urged. I didn't know what to do. Should I run?

"No! Don't hurt him!" My mom's frantic screams started to fill the air. "Run Caleb! Don't look back!"

I knew this was a dream, I knew it! I used all my brain power to urge myself to wake up but I just couldn't snap out of this horrific dream land. Tears are now streaming down my cheeks. I covered my ears in an attempt to block out my mom's terrified screams but they kept echoing around me, bouncing off the walls towards me. I could feel myself loosing it.

"Mom!" I screamed into the never ending darkness. Then, everything began to fall and crumble. The next thing I know, I was falling, falling, falling. My own screams deafening myself.

"Mom!" Jayden screamed and his head shot up from the table so violently that he thought his neck might snap. His face was sticky from sweat and tears. Suddenly, his bedroom door was flung open and his dad barged in with a kitchen knife yelling "Who's there!" With his hair sticking out in crazy angles. When he saw that there was only Jayden in the room, he lowered his weapon and walked towards Jayden. Jayden was taken aback by his dad's entrance.

"Woah dad, chill, its only me." Jayden said, wiping his face with his sleeve.

"Then the hell did you scream like you were being murdered!" He yelled waving the knife around caysing Jayden to shrink back into his chair more.

"Erm.. Bad dream?" Jayden shrugged. His dad sighed and set the knife down beside Jayden's homework. He then pulled another chair over and sat opposite him and ran his finger through his hair making it stick out in even crazier directions. He looked like a porcupine. Literally. After a moment of awkward silence, Jayden asked.

"Why did those people want to kill us? And why did they take mom?" There, the million dollar question that had been haunting him for the past six years. His dad looked at him thoughtfully for awhile then glanced away.

"C'mon dad, I'm eighteen. I have the right to know." Jayden pleaded. His dad looked back at him and sighed.

"You really want to know?" He asked. Jayden nodded his head eagerly. His dad seemed to take a moment to collect his thoughts.

"Your mother, she was a beautiful woman. She's strong and strong willed. But she.." He paused for awhile. Almost as if it pained him to say the next part.

"She was from an assasin organisation." He paused to let Jayden take it in. Jayden's eyes widen in suprise and disbelief. After awhile, he carried on.

"She was an excellent killer, one of the best in the organisation. The way she kills, leaving no evidence behind. Flawless. She was initially sent to get close to me, to bleed the company dry, then when she achieved it, she was supposed to assasinate me." He paused and looked at Jayden, a faint smile appeared at his lips.

"Little did we know about what happens next. She got hired into the company as a secretary. We see each other almost everyday, she helped me with everything and I trusted her. Then she started to make coffee for me every morning, we depended on each other, we couldn't bear to be apart. That's when we both realise"

"That you guys have fallen in love." Jayden finished. His dad smiled sadly at him and nodded.

"Yes, we fell in love. When she told me she was supposed to kill me, imagine my shock. But she told me she loved me, she would be willing to leave the organisation and we would go some place far away where no one will find us. For some reason I believed her. So we moved to California. A year later, we had you. We had thirteen years of peace. But thirteen years later, they found us again. We knew that day would come. But they just would not spare your mother." He trailed off. Jayden looked at the knife still resting on the table. My mom's an assasin. He thought. His life was beginning to sound more like an action drama. After a moment of silence, his dad stood up and took the kitchen knife.

"I'll go see what we can whip up for dinner." And he left the room, leaving Jayden alone. Jayden buried his face in his hands.

"Urgh.. Parents are so complicated sometimes." He mumbled into his hands. He rubbed his face and headed to the kitchen to help with dinner.

Turns out dinner was just microwaved left overs, but it was better than nothing. Jayden made another mental note to get some groceries together with that air refreshener.

That night, Jayden lay in bed and thought about the day's events. He still can't believe his mom was an ex assasin. On second thought, that might be quite cool. Then his thoughts drifted to Taylor, how her eyes disappear when she laughed and how she ran her fingers through her hair. He knew he shouldn't be thinking about her but he couldn't help it., He's falling in love.
