Left behind - kageyama

Tobio, it's been a year now. it feels like a hell of a lot longer than that...
Everyone is getting together tomorrow, I know you won't be there... but I'll still leave a spot at the table for you.
I'll also leave this letter at your shrine tomorrow... I hope you'll read it.
Things have been weird without you around, the Queen needs her king right? You always hated that nickname...

You stopped writing for a moment, tears already spilling from your eyes.
Taking a deep breath, you continued writing, a flurry of emotions being poured onto the page in front of you.

I wish I could go back to the way things were... back to when you were still my king of the court. When you would get all grumpy about the nickname... I know you hated it at first, but I still think it grew on you after people started calling me the Queen...
I'm not sure how I'll face everyone tomorrow, we agreed to meet once a year after graduation... you missed last year though... do you remember that night?

You felt a tinge of pain in your heart as you wrote, the emotions that had been swelling inside of you were being released after a year of heartache.

I'm sure you remember it... you had been sick for a while, you weren't well enough to leave the hospital. I said that I would stay with you... but you told me I should go to the annual team meet up.
I never should have left you.
I remember that night so vividly, I was at the team meet when I got the call... I rushed to the hospital as quickly as I could... I can still see the look in your eyes... the heartbreaking smile on your face when you saw me... and the last words you said to me.
"I'm sorry... I love you."
I really can't believe it's been a year... you've been gone far too long, if you're reading this... please come back, I can't do this without you, my king of the court.
I love you.

You finished writing and placed the letter in an envelope, along with a picture of you and tobio.

'My favorite picture of us... right after they won a big game...'

[flashback//highschool]

"you did great! They didn't stand the chance against my king of the court!"

"I thought you said you'd stop calling me that..."

"I said I'd think about it, I thought about it and decided that the nickname stays!

Kageyama rolled his eyes, maintaining his signature grumpy face even after winning a game.

"Oh don't be like that!"

"Like what"

"You're being all grouchy again!"

Walking up to kageyama, you wrapped him in a hug.

"You did wonderful out there love. I'm very proud of you!"

You kept your arms wrapped around him, but pulled away slightly to look at him. He usually looked rather unimpressed, but when you did things like that he'd get flustered, breaking down his walls for a moment. A light blush was spread across his face, and he had a small smile as he looked at you.
You stared into each others eyes, almost in a trance, until...

*click*

Both of you were brought back to reality at the sound of a camera, you turned to see sugawara pointing a camera at you and kageyama.
Kageyamas blush darkened as he realized what happened, and you walked over to Suga to look at the picture.

It was you with your arms wrapped around kageyamas waist, looking up at him. And kageyama with his arms over your shoulders looking down at you.

"Suga can you please send me that! I need a few thousand copy's!"

[flashback end]

'I just want to go back...'

After sealing up the letter and picture, you fell asleep, trying to stop more tears from flowing.

You woke up feeling more pained than usual...

'Tobio... today's the anniversary of your death...'

You got ready and left to see the team, first stopping at kageyamas shrine to leave the letter. as you were leaving, you couldn't help but wonder...

'What is it going to be like... seeing them all again...'

Seeing everyone brought back a lot of memories, you all shared story's and reminisced about your high school days.

'Im glad I got to see them... I'm sure kageyama would have loved to be here.'

Suga noticed the drop in your Expression.

"You alright y/n?"

"Y-yeah I'm ok... Its just... I think kageyama would have really enjoyed tonight."

Everyone looked at you with sympathy, they may have not had the same relationship that you had with kageyama... but they all loved him.

It was silent for a while, until Hinata spoke. "I bet he'd be proud of all of us, knowing him, he wouldn't show it... but he cared about all of us!"

A reminiscent smile washed over your face. "Yeah... he'd be really proud of us all. So let's keep going, and do our best, for kageyama."

After a few more hours, you went back home. Walking up to your doorway, you saw a letter taped to your door.

On the envelope was your name, written in kageyamas handwriting...

'Theres no mistaking it... that's kageyamas writing. But... how?'

You pulled the letter from your door, walking inside, you carefully opened the envelope.

Y/n... if you're reading this, it's been a year since I died. As I'm writing this, my condition is getting worse... I thought I should write you a letter... just in case, and have it delivered to you on the 1 year anniversary of my death.
I hope you're doing well, I'm sure you are... your strength and resilience has never failed to astound me.
I'm sorry that I had to leave you... I wish I could have stayed.
Whenever you miss me I want you to remember something... the advice you gave me after we lost the match against seijoh.

[flashback//highschool]

"You did great out there kags!"

Kageyama looked at you with tears welling up in his eyes...

"We lost... I didn't do great, if I did great we would have won..."

You gave kageyama a sad smile, lightly cupping his face.

"Don't say things like that, you might have lost this game... but loosing doesn't make you weak, it just means there's still room to get stronger! Don't let a loss hold you back, let it be what drives you forward. work hard, endure, and get stronger. Then... once you're ready... you'll come back here, and you'll kick seijohs ass in a game! I'll be there for you, every step of the way."

You're strong y/n, stronger than anyone Iv ever met. So when you miss me, remember those words.
don't let my death hold you back, let it be what drives you forward.
Work hard, endure, and get stronger.
I know you can do it, and I'll be there for you, every step of the way.
I'll see you again one day my queen, until then... please stay strong.

Your hands shook as you held the letter, Tears pouring from your eyes...

'Kageyama... I'll get stronger, for you."

[authors note: oh dear that was sad... honestly I was just really angry and sad about some things and when I feel a lot of emotions, writing them into a story helps me calm down and figure things out. Being left behind is really shitty, and sometimes I feel really overwhelmed when I think about it... but I want to remind myself that I can get through it.
