Iwaizumi- Not the boy next door

Oikawa Toru seemed like the perfect 'boy next door' archetype, and by all accounts he is. He's smart, athletic, pretty, popular, charismatic, and most importantly of all... he lives next door.
But he's never been the one I liked, I'm not really into the boy next door character. I do however, like the boy next door's best friend, Iwaizumi Hajime.

Toru and I basically grew up together, and although plenty of people have told us we'd make a great couple I don't think either of us could ever see each other that way. Naturally, growing up with Toru also meant getting to know Hajime or "Iwa-chan" as Toru always calls him.
And what I got to know was that Hajime, despite his appearance and general attitude, was quite a kind and gentle person. If you aren't Toru at least...

He wouldn't hurt a fly, and I mean that quite literally... he thinks bugs are cute.
I've had feelings for Hajime since we were kids, and he's never noticed. But I can't really blame him for that, all thanks to Toru the guy never notices that someone's into him, he always just assumes they're around him to get closer to Toru or that they just want to be friends... yeah okay he's a little dense.

Second person POV

"So it's the last day of school, you finally gonna ask him out?" Toru peaked his head into my line of sight with a cheery smile
"You're kidding right? I've made it 10 years without saying anything to him, I think I can last another day"
"Ughhhh so boring~ where's the drama?! The romantic confession in the rain on the last day of school where you promise love each other forever, even if you're hundreds of miles away from the other! I mean come on this is your last chance to tell him how you feel!"
"You know, for an aromantic you're pretty obsessed with romance."
"Being aromantic doesn't mean I don't want to watch you fall in love!"
You let out a heavy sigh "you're such a snoop"

After quite a long day of school, the entire time spent imagining that romantic confession Toru so desperately pushed on you, the final bell finally rang.
You made your way to the front gates to meet Hajime and Toru
"Hajime, where's toru?"
"He said he had a romantic confession to... watch? He told me we could head home without him." You gave a strained smile "of course he did..."

Throughout the walk home you couldn't get Torus words out of your head
'Last chance huh?'
"Hey Haji..."
"Yeah?"
"I uh..." your commitment to confessing was short lived as the nerves got to you "what are you gonna do now? Y'know like... after high school?"
"I think I'm gonna get a degree in athletic training, and you?"
"Well I want to keep playing volleyball, but I'm gonna major in business or something as a back up. It's gonna suck not being around you and Toru anymore though..."

"Who says you won't be around us anymore?"
Before you realized it, your feet had stopped moving. "Oh shit... I forgot to tell you." Hajime gave you a strange look, waiting for you to continue. "Um well... I guess I kinda figured Toru would have already told you. I'm gonna go to college away from home, not sure where exactly I'm gonna go yet..."
Hajime took a step closer to you, giving you a sweet smile and ruffling your hair. "Doesn't matter if you live right down the street or on the other side of the world, the three of us will still always be friends."

In all honesty, I really wish he hadn't given me that reassurance, because that was one of the last times the two of us saw each other.
Hajime's grandfather lived alone in America, and as he got older, Hajime's family grew more and more worried for his safety. Only a day after the last day of school, Hajime's grandfather fell off of a ladder while trying to work on his house. Luckily, a neighbor saw and quickly got help. after that, Hajime's family moved to America to help out his grandfather.

The last time I talked to him was the day he left, he promised toru and I that he'd make sure to call us as often as he could... it's been two months and he's yet to contact either of us.

"You better not just abandon me like Iwa-chan! Call me every day after class okay?!" Toru held tightly onto my hand, trying his best to stop me from leaving for America.
"I promise Toru, and I know you're mad at iwa but I still think there's gotta be a reason for his absence. He wouldn't just leave us behind like that..."
"I hope so, if it was on purpose I'm gonna kill him."
I have a soft laugh, pulling torus hand towards myself and wrapping my arms around him. "We've been friends for life and you're stuck with me til the day you die, probably any day now... but still. I promise I'll call you every day."
I pulled away to see torus eyes brimming with tears "alright get in the stupid car I don't want you to see me cry!"
"Toru I've seen you cry so many times already"
"Shut up and go to America already!"
"Alright... I'll see you next time we have a break..."
"I'll be counting down the days!" Toru smiled as I got into the back seat of the car.

"You know... I still think the two of you should date." Your mom teased
"I already told you I'm not into the boy next door type."

After a 12 hour flight I arrived to my new home, incredibly jet lagged.
The university I'll be attending doesn't offer dorms, but there's an apartment complex not far from it that was well within my price range. Unfortunately for tonight all I had was a sleeping bag since the rest of my things wouldn't be arriving until tomorrow afternoon.

Before going to sleep I decided to go out and grab something for dinner, though the first thing I saw when I left my apartment was... "Hajime..?"
The boy immediately turned around at the sound of my voice, not hesitating to wrap me in a hug as soon as he saw my face. "Oh thank god..." he mumbled.
When he finally pulled away, I noticed something that was more than rare to see from Iwaizumi Hajime, tears.

"Why did you ghost us?" Was all I could manage to say... my voice sounded so much more pained than I wanted it to. "My phone broke, I promise I'd never do that on purpose! I wasn't able to access my backup since the computer is still at the house in Japan, I lost your numbers... I'm so glad you're here... wait what are you doing here?"
I gave Hajime a relieved smile, glad to finally have an explanation for his disappearance. "I live here as of today. starting college at U/N! This is my apartment actually." I smiled, pointing towards my door.
"Wait seriously? Looks like we're neighbors now" he grinned, opening up the door to the apartment next to mine.

"Torus gonna be so jealous, you took his place as my neighbor."
"Shittykawa can cry me a river." He chuckled
Iwa gave me a fond smile "I really am glad you're here Y/n. I've missed you a hell of a lot."
"Is this your way of confessing your undying love for me hajime?" I asked, rather dramatically.
He only gave me a smirk, stepping a bit closer to me "do you want it to be?"
"Huh?" Was all I could muster out, the soft scent of pine from his cologne was practically intoxicating...

"This is probably a bad idea, but I know I'm gonna regret it if I don't... so here goes I guess, I've had feelings for you since we were kids, and I've always tried to hide them or just completely ignore them for the sake of saving the friendship. But after I left I spent so much time regretting that I had never told you how I felt. So better late then never, I hope.."
I tried to put together a response but my mind was far to jumbled to put together a half decent sentence. the best I could do for now was take a step closer to him, rest my head on his chest, and mumble "Can I kiss you?"

'Shit... I guess I am the type to fall for the boy next door."

Authors note: this is the fourth or fifth idea I had for this one shot, honestly I've been pretty stuck on it (we love writers block)
