Chapter Forty-Two:
"I want to rewrite the stars, love."
"What is a patronus?" Lupin's voice echoed through the classroom.
"It is a defensive spell which produces a silver, animal guardian, used to protect a witch or wizard. It could also be used to send out messages or alerts." Hermione's high pitched voice responds back.
"Correct Miss Granger." Lupin starts. "Can anyone tell me the incantation used to cast the spell?"
"Expecto patronum." Hermione answers again.
"Correct again Miss Granger."
"This is a powerful spell that can be used to protect you. It requires strong will and strength." Lupin explains. "You need to think of a powerful memory, something good and focus all of your energy onto it when casting the spell."
He moves to the centre of the room and everyone watches as he points his wand up in the air. He looks focussed on the wall as he yells out the spell. A powerful wisp of silver shoots out of the wand and forms into a wolf. The animal jumps around the room, past some students and back into the wand, amazing everyone that was watching.
"Now it's your turn." Lupin looks back at the class as everyone takes position around the large room.
"Who wants to go first?" Lorenzo looks at Atlas, Ren, Draco and Theo cheekily.
"I will." Ren steps up.
She copies Lupin's stance before saying the spell but nothing happens. She falters for a second before picking her wand back up and trying again. Small slivers of silver slither out but aside from that she doesn't get far.
"Keep trying, don't give up easily." Lupin tries to motivate his students.
"Not me I give up, who's next." Ren sighs looking toward the group.
"I'll go next." Lorenzo says enthusiastically.
He closes his eyes and points his wand up. He takes a deep breath and holds it or a couple of seconds trying to hound down on the key memory. A small smile slips onto his lips before he says the spell. The shadow of an animal shoots out but Lorenzo gets too excited and the spell is broken immediately.
"Mr Sinclair, so close but you need to stay focussed." Lupin stands near the teens. "The animal your patronus takes after is what you represent. It's what lies deep inside of you."
"Can it change?" Atlas asks curiously.
"Very rarely, Miss Lennon. But yes, it can change." He informs her.
"Depending on what?" She questions further.
"I'm not entirely sure. It doesn't happen often." Lupin tells her.
"Not everyone can produce a patronus, things like this depend on the goodness of your heart." He tells the class and Atlas' eyes lock with Draco.
"Draco, you go next." Atlas pushes him forward and leaves no room for argument.
"Expecto patronum." He mutters the spell but not even the tiniest flash of silver comes out.
"Maybe try a different memory." Theo suggests.
Draco tries again but this time with his eyes closed. He sighs before saying the spell again with more confidence and a couple of silver sparks shoot out of the wand before he gives up.
"What memory did you think of?" Ren asks innocently and only Lorenzo notices Draco's eyes flash to Atlas.
"You go next." Atlas tells Theo.
